Problems with Precision Tune in Santa Cruz

I was a customer at Precision Tune in Santa Cruz 3 times in 1998. They used to catch my attention with $9.95 oil-change coupons. I had a 1985 Mazda 626 with ~ 150,000 miles on it and just wanted to keep that car alive at low cost.

Visit #1:

I got a $9.95 oil change. They also inspected your car while they were at it. They found some other things that should be taken care of, like a bad bearring. I'd say that they did ok that time.

Visit #2:

Got a $9.95 oil change and had the car checked. I knew that the car had vacuum leaks and asked them to check them out. They found 4 leaks, made me $ estimates over the phone, suggested to fix 3 of them. The bill was like $300, I believe. So when I come to pick up the car, they do that little game "Sign here and pay and then you get your keys" and I think "Umm, I'd really like to see the car first or even test drive it before I pay $300" but.. well.. no spine in my back, so I just pay and get it over with.
I walk over to my car and one of the guys is with me. I have about no knowledge about cars, all I ever did was exchange an alternator and fuses but I thought "Hey let's open the hood and see if something looks different for $300". Maybe something is new and shiny or so, right?
I pop the hood open and the first thing I see is that metal pipe that is supposed to connect the motor (black) with the blue box where the air filter is in.. well that pipe was not in place but hung lose around. I think that pipe would suck clean filtered air from the filter box into the "motor".
Hmm... the mechanic admitted that this was not intended, drove the car over to his shack and fixed it.
Hmm... I really wondered what else..

The repair did show effect though. My car used to make 60mph @ 3000rpm, after fixing the leaks it did 66mph @ 3000rpm and similar in higher ranges. It did also run somehow rougher, more noisy, something that was hard to substantiate, of course. So, I was still happy with my $300 repair.

Visit #3: (Now we get to the $399.95 oil change!)

Once more, I wanted a $9.95 oil change. Done, I pick up the car, and it's doing fine. So, later in the night, I drive into the mountains (~ 15 miles) and the car feels kind of funny. Excuse my lack of better words, but I am not an experienced driver, that was actually my first car. Next day I drive another 20 miles and it's acting up. I open the hood and there's oil all over the place. There's no oil cap!
Let me see. I get an oil change and next day my oil cap is gone. The hood to my car is locked while I parked it in the time between. Hm. Only a devil would conclude that.. no, I am not going to accuse Precision here, after all they have proven careful work in visit #2 already.

I had to get the motor washed at a different place: $40
I had to get all kinds of rubber parts exchanged that were damaged by the oil in these 2 days: $350. Needless to say, Precision Tune did not feel responsible.

$9.95 + $40 + $350 = $399.95 for an oil change, and I do not even drive a Porsche.

Conclusion

I would not recommend Precision Tune to anyone. They obviously do not know what they are doing or maybe they are on drugs while they work.

A year ago (in 2000), I bought a new Firebird, and I'd rather drive it over the cliff than have Precision Tune get their fingers on it.

Precision Tune sucks because I called the manager told her what the problem I was having with my car. Which were that it was sluggish a couple of times backing up and then it started being sluggish in drive. I called the manager she said I should come in and flush my transmission it should take an hour and that it might not make it better but it won't make it worse. My car drove me up there just fine then my 1hr. service was 6 hrs. long and then I was told to come back in two days they didn't have the part they needed. On Thursday I recieved the call to come back and get my car I asked how it was driving the manager said it is driving well. Which was true for the first 300yds. Then it stopped working. Funny thing when the mechanic came that worked on my car he said he told the manager that it wasn't a good idea to change the fluid they just didn't mention that to me. Also, they paid to have my car towed to my house. Is that admitting guilt? Now lucky me less than a month after Christmas I have to invest $2400.00 into a transmission. Would have been nice to know that I could have had a choice if they would have consulted with me. WHo should pay????

Transmission flushes are a very good thing. If flushing your transmission causes your trans to act-up or slip afterwards, that's your fault for not having maintenance performed in the past. The reason that your trans. slips after the flush is that the trans fluid has a 'friction modifyer' in it. The friction modifyer depletes/loses its effect over time and mileage and that causes the torque converter clutch to shudder (particularly true for chrysler products), and the reultant increase in friction allows a normally slipping transmission to appear to be in good operating condition. The fix--to restore operation to the pre-flushed condition is to flush again with TYPE-F fluid which used to be the fluid that Fords used. Type-F has no or at least very little modifyer in it and is more 'grabby' (my word). It is your best bet to keep going, but, regardless of what you 'FEEL' your trans is worn-out and needs new clutch discs and steel plates and that's because of the miles you travelled and the shifts that occured in the life of the transmission.

Electronically controlled transmissions are constantly adjusted by the computer module and the pressure regulator solenoids to get the maximum life, fuel economy and shift quality until there's nothing left to work with. Changing the fluid to something that by its very nature is designed to SLIP is obviously going to exacerbate any hidden problem and that is not the fault of the servicer; the fault of failure is with the vehicle owner for procrastincating on proper maintenance.

If you doubt what I say, research it yourself and I mean in books--not internet forums. There's a huge difference between DATA and INFORMATION. Before opening your mouth or posting to blame someone for damaging your car, arm yourself with FACTS not FEELINGS.

IT IS TRUE THAT IF YOUR TRANS IS SLIPPING PRIOR TO SERVICE IT IS USUALY DUE TO LACK OF MAINTENCE, BUT ANY FOOL THAT TALKS YOU INTO FLUSHING IT KNOWING IT WILL MAKE IT WORSE IS A CROOK. PRECISION TUNES GOODYEARS AND ALL OF THE REST OF THE AFTERMARKET SHOPS ARE THERE FOR ONE THING SALES!!! IF THEY DONT SELL THEY WILL BE FIRED SO YES THEY ARE GOING TO RIP YOU OFF EVERY CHANCE THEY GET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Precision tune SUCKS. F'cking scammers.

We took our van there years back for a smog. They said it didn't pass and needed $xxx worth of work. WHAT? Bullsh*t I told them.. It passed last time and had only been driven maybe 500 miles since then. Talked to the manager and told him I thought it was a crock and wanted our money back. He said they stood by it that it didn't pass. Took the van to another smog place up Soquel Drive. Guess what? it PASSED. Went back to precision and demanded my money back. Got it. Screw them!

ok so i took my fucking car to precision tunes for a simple oil change... included in my oil change was simple things like toping off all the fluids... They left the cap halfway on on my radiator and all the anifreeze leaked out.. so then my car runs hot and eventually shuts off... the next day i call precisin tunes to tell them what happend and to see if they could fix it since it was THERE fault.. they told me i had to get it towed back to the shop because they had no way of getting to it...so i did...i get there and they check out the car and say the radiator is has a crack in it... and they are not going to pay for it.. when obviously its their FAULT and then they tell me i need a distributor i just wish i would have went next door to jiffy lube!!!! FUUUCKKK PRECISION TUNES... they are complete scammers!!!!! i would never reccomend anyone to go there even if its just to put air in your tires DONT DO IT!!!!

Precision Tune in Royal Oak, Michigan charged me $198.00 for an oil change where the Mercedes dealer charge is $135.00. It was part of a Groupon and when I asked for credit between dealer charge and their price they said they would issue a credit but then denied it from AMEX. Additionally, I had to take the vehicle back as they did not do the job properly and I had leaking oil in my garage...DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR TO PRECISION TUNE...EVER!
