about the PALE FONTS:
you could look if you are using 'CLEAR TYPE'. Follow these steps:
1) Control panel
2) Display properties
3) tab 'Appearance'
4) button 'Effects'
5) the second selection is it checked? And if so, does the drop-down list say 'ClearType' ?
If it says 'ClearType' in step 5, switch it to 'Standard'.
