Question:

I get questionable emails to my Yahoo! Mail account. How can I find out the sender's IP address and where the sender is coming from?

Answer:

Follow these steps to find the sender's IP address in Yahoo! Mail:

1. Log into your Yahoo! mail with your username and password.
2. Click on Inbox or whichever folder you have stored your mail in.
3. Open the mail.
4. If you can't see the headers above the mail message, your headers are not displayed. To display the headers,
* Click on 'Options' in the top-right corner
* In the 'Mail Options' page, click on 'General Preferences'
* Scroll down to Messages where you have the Headers option
* Make sure that 'Show all headers on incoming messages' is selected
* Click on the Save button
* Go back to the mails and open that mail
5. You should now see the headers.
6. Look for Received: from followed by the IP address between square brackets [ ]. For example [202.65.138.109]
This is the IP address of the sender.
If there are lots of Received: from with IP addresses, select the IP address in the last pattern. If there are no instances of Received: from with the IP address, select the first IP address in X-Originating-IP.
8. Trace the IP address of the sender using http://www.ripe.net/perl/whois

X-Mailer
http://msdn.microso...10).aspx
http://google.com/s..=X-Mailer

The sending program can be:
Web based http://en.wikipedia..i/Webmail
Client based http://en.wikipedia..il_client
Some clients http://en.wikipedia..l_clients

Webmail is available from every browser, just by logging on to the mail service provider.

Clients like The Bat!, Outlook / (Express), eudora need to be installed on the local computer, and a profile must be created for each mail user. This means, public computers in libraries, internet cafes, etc. CANNOT create a profile per user, per machine! As an example, someone claiming to write from a friend's computer, internet cafe, etc., using The Bat! is hiding some truth. There is also a company in Yoshkar-Ola, with the name internetcafe (one word). Their intentions and purposes are obviously questionable!

Can someone please help me. My Yahoo account was hacked into multiple times and I had to close my account with Yahoo. I made some copies of harrassing emails I received from the person that hacked into it. I submitted what I have to the cops but they said they need the IP address of where the emails came from. Can someone tell me how to find the IP address of the sender even though my Yahoo account is now closed? Thanks for your help
Lisa
