Netscape 4 seems to freeze when opening a page with Java applets

Question:

Netscape 4 seems to freeze when opening a page with Java applets. Why is that?

Answer:

As compared to Internet Explorer 4, Netscape Navigator 4 takes substantially longer to start the Java Virtual Machine for the first time - This may appear to many as a frozen page.
With version 5, Internet Explorer's JVM is also executing applet code faster than Netscape.
