What is an *.MDF file?

If it is a rather large file, e.g. 650 MB, then it is most likely a CD image. If it is a file of smaller size, see at the end of this article. These MDF image files are created using a CD/DVD CD/DVD image file editor (and CD burner and CD/DVD backup tool) called MagicISO Maker.
MagicISO Maker can directly create, edit, extract, and burn ISO/MDF files. It also can convert almost all CD/DVD image formats to ISO/BIN/CUE, Nero (.NRG), and CloneCD (.CCD/. IMG/. SUB). With MagicISO, you can handle DVD image up to 10GB; make CD image files from CD/DVD-ROM; also can burn ISO files and other CD/DVD image files (BIN, IMG, CIF, NRG, BWI, VCD) to CD-R/RW; support loading boot image file exported by WinISO and UltraISO; burn CD image files in ISO9660, Joliet, and UDF format; edit properties of CD/DVD image files; it has the ability to correct volume serial number after editing original CD/DVD image file; search files or directories with wildcard characters in CD/DVD image file.

You can download it here:

Not a CD image file?

If you cannot open your MDF file with Magic Iso Maker, then it may be a database file. dBase used to store their memo fields in a separate file. Regular tables were stored in *.dbf files, memo files were stored in *.mdf files.

SQL Server 2000 creates MDF files as well.

If no one has already said this, instead of downloading Alcohol 120% to convert it to a .iso file you can simply change the file extension by renaming the file to make it so that Daemon will be able to mount it. If you also have a .mds file accompanying your .mdf file, Daemon will mount the .mds file, but you'll still be using all of the data from the accopanying .mdf file.

It's great how some of yu will describe in great detail how to find and right click an icon in the system tray (GEEZE) but you then proceed to gloss over all other more important detail. If you believe the person must have instructions on how to right click an icon or find the system tray, why do you then think the person knows everything else about mounting, unmounting, etc.? Magic ISO easily made the virtual drive for me. I have no problem mounting the .iso file...all you have to do is right click the file and say mount. or do it from within Magic ISO. For some reason, right clicking the virtual drive doesn't give the option to mount but only to unmount all drivers. Finally, the iso (which is a game) doesn't play. It was originaly a .mdf and .mds file. Magic ISO will not convert it to .bin OR .iso. The only option I could do was from another forum which said over and over to simply rename the .mdf file to .bin and then use Magic ISO to convert it. Now, Magic ISO will convert the newly named .bin file to an .iso. which doens't play. Maybe this was a wrong procedure. Everywhere I go, eveyrone has this attitude 'LOOK YOU JUST DO THIS - GAWD FREAKING NOOBIES' like they were born with knowledge and never had to learn anything for the first time themselves. Then they proceed to explain how to navigate through my directories (DUH) while completely leap frogging through the steps that make an iso play.

After much fooling around, I accidentally discovered that the .mds file will mount. The .mdf file will not mount for some reason, unless it is converted to .iso or .bin but it also will not convert. Gets error message 'not a valid cd file' but others dl same file say it works for them. Using Magic ISO for those curious, but it doesnt matter. Preference is only preference, it still works. Using another won't change why there is a problem. Another forum says to manually rename .mdf to .bin then convert to .iso and all be fine. I do that, it converts, but the .iso doesn't play. I finally decide maybe the .mds file needs to be included somehow. no ever mentions this anywhere. I also made a .uif (compressed iso) and decided to try to add the .mds to that file. It added it fine, then suddenly displayed all the files that you should see when you put a cd in a drive - even a virtual one. I unmounted all drives and tried mounting just the bare mds file itself. It is only 4kb, but once mounted, the virtual drive says the name of the game, and it holds the hundreds of mb that are in the unmounted mdf file. And it plays. So, for whatever reason, with Magic ISO, and wiith this mdf/mds set of files, it requires that the .mds be mounted, not the .mdf. As for making into a working .iso or .uif, it reguires that both files be included into the conversion, not just the .mdf. Until I find out anything different.

Attention All
I just installed you Daemon Toll Pro Trial version
I often download torrents which come in sometimes as 'Image file'. iso file and MDF
So I want to convert that image file as a regular video file in
order to be able to burn as a regular dvd and able to play
on my computer or portable dvd or any other dvd player
Can your Daemon Tool Pro, as well, identify whether
it is a PAL or NTSC format.
If Image file is PAL I want to be able to convert as NTSC.
Would appreciate your comments before I purchase.
So far I have tried Using Nero and every possible Converter that I can think of and still no success.
Please someone help me

[i downloaded a game from tis files is mdf. How can i extract it?]

'Extraction' is not the absolute correct word.

What you have is an ISO type image created through a proprietary program called

ALCOHOL 120%. It would be best if you obtained that program BUT I think

there is a free program called 'Image Burn' that would do the same thing.

You must have a working CD-R/W or DVD-R/W depending on the size of the image.

You need the appropriate blank media and when Image Burn opens select

'Burn image to disk' then browse to the image '*.mdf file' and select it and then

burn to disk. Take care that you do not just burn 'data' to disk' or you will just

have the *.mdf file on your media unconverted.

It should now be in original file format of .exe or whatever it was to start.

You may download IMAGE BURN free from
