The scammer who said his name was David Thorpe, from Alabaster, AL, was found on ChristianMingle.com. His user name was Crowdedpassion. The same profile picture was seen June 19, 2012 on Military Dating.org, user name this time Loveme1303, from Anniston, AL. I don't know what name or email he's using now.
This is a sophisticated group of Ghanaian scammers. The grammar is better than most (except for the use of the telltale, i) They use a romantic, tender, G-rated script and clips of operas and movies. (Favorite opera cover, Pavaroti's Nessum Dorma; Favorite movie, Ghost; favorite rock group and song: Scorpions, Wind of Change.) They are also electronically sophisticate, using Photoshop to expertly superimpose a face from the photos being used onto US Army General Ordierno to simulate the scammer giving a press conference!
I enjoyed a five week flirtation with the fictitious David Thorpe. I had fun and didn't lose anything because I was skeptical from the start.
It all fell apart for them when Thorpe, who was supposedly a retired US Army Col. working as a civilian contractor in Afghanistan, reached the end of his contract and was suppose to return stateside (detailed flight plans and times were provided). But, oops, he was stopped in Philadelphia because he was trying to take 87 pounds (40 ingots) of gold that he said he had found in Afghanistan into the US. His choices: give up the gold or go to Ghana to find documentation for the shipment. Really.
Next, he's using an internet cafe (yes, he admitted it) claiming his hotel lacked internet access and throwing out more protestations of love and devotion. But it all went sour for these scammers when one of them made a big mistake, sending me an email about a dream David supposedly had about me. But wait, this email was X-rated and told from a woman's POV. My name was at the top of the message but it was a totally different font from the body of the email. Amateur.
I was very lucky. I didn't lose a dime and I learned some important lessons about scammers and myself. Thank you, David Thorpe.
Since then I've become an internet sleuth. I get the header on Thorpe's emails sent from 'Afghanistan' and they like the others all originated in Ghana. Big surprise?
Does anyone recognize this man? Or his friends or family? He's as much a victim as anyone, since his ID was stolen for this con.

Thank you for reporting this scam! Scammers are very into with photoshop sometimes, but often you can see very clearly that something is missing or not correct on the photos.I found the real ID on the man you where looking for ,it is very sad how people get abused by scammers ,probably stolen from an social networksite ...scammers screws up sometimes too they are having often many victims in the very same time and that can be an savior for an victim of course..
