No, that seems pretty unusual. Maybe he had bigger fish to fry? Maybe he had to get out of town quickly? could even be an amateur. And two or three months is very patient....2-3 weeks before the money letter is the average.
Usually they scam you for the 'visa money' first and then hit you for the ticket money soon after....ironic really since you can't a normal tourist or sponsored visa to either Europe or North America without having paid for round trip tickets and/or tour and hotel rooms first. In other words, they should be scamming you for more than 1500 dollars right from the get go. Ergo, you should be happy it was only 250 bucks, although that's a good month's wage in Yoshkar Ola.
Otherwise, there are scammers on every dating site, Russian, Nigerian, Filipino...one was even busted in the north of Sweden. The legit sites will remove the scammers if you report it (and you're a paying customer). I know it's easy to be wise after the fact but it pays to do your homework....if you'd checked the visa procedures, you wouldn't have got scammed.
I'm not sure what you should do....but two options are, either bait him...i.e. get as many letters and photos out of him as you can, post them here, generally waste his time so he has less time to scam other people.
Or you can send him this short message + photo in Russian. It's not in cyrillic so you can send it to any email account. Translation provided on request.
Pozhalujsta, ne oskorbl'ajte moj intellekt. Ya ne imeyu interes dl'a tashego skamerstvo. Oto'idi, a to jebnu. Idi na khuy!
Thanks for the tips. It is official now, Olesya Rozhentsova is a scam. I was looking around and I found several of the start-up emails sent to other guys- word for word- by Tatyana (slight variations if any). Different photos of other females and all. Thank god I only got suckered for 250, which you can't even wipe your ass with here in the States anymore. Well, to anyone else, her/it/his email address was firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com. Whoever the bastards are, they are very patient and sly, they bait you for two months and never mention money until they can't pay for the entire price of the flight ticket. They may not ask for it directly because they want you to offer it without raising any flags. They are good, I'll give them that much.
I especially like the whole bit about the 'small kitten who showed up at the hospital, so tender, she was afraid to touch it' and those tasty pies she loves to bake- who doesn't love pie!!!!

b-scammed, Sorry you got scammed, but like you say you could be philosophical about the sum involved. Eddie has put it plainly. Hopefully you'll encourage your own friends on homework before they become future victims.
That USEMB site is a must for everyone who is talking to a Russian or at least thinking about it. I have to admit, I felt uneasy about the thing from the beginning but was hoping for the best. I'm still young and trustworthy, which is basically like walking around with a big target on my forehead. I never asked for this, but suddenly there is some beautiful girl emailing you with these fairytale love lines. Man it sucks to had both financially and emotionally. Doing your homework first is the critical factor!!! Now the hard part is returning back to work early from leave and explaining why things didn't work out with my so-called girlfriend.
BTW, OJAS & Eddie, what are your stories. I mean, what (or better who) led you guys here?

Mine basically started with financial hardship, leading to lonelyness, during absolute computer ingorance, gullible to accept anything resembling a flicker of hope. A near perfect setting for scammers and they were landing by the dozens, threatening to fill-up my limited inbox space.
The hard part was, there was exactly one real girl, with full knowledge of my finances, wanting to continue our relationship - just for me. I approached my friends, seeking 800 euro loan to save the life of a poor girl's mom (see Elena Solodovnikova thread). One of my friends taught me 2 verbs - scam, google, and pulled this girl on his screen. In my mentally wrecked state, I requested the real girl to find a different boyfriend. The actual $ I lost was for my pic at a professional studio for an insistent scammer. But I cannot assign a $ value for the prospect lost for a relationship, for me or for that real girl.
Oh well, it's too late for me, but I hope I can inform some other poor guy before it's too late for him ... ''DO YOUR HOMEWORK BUDDY''
Today I'm a burgeoning Systems Engineer, and yes, homework is the last thing I want to miss .. A couple of missed meals, now and then is OK
* scammers generally target older guys, cos they have more money and they're more desperate :))
* I can't really remember exactly how I came to start posting here. I originally met a real Russian girl on udate.com in the summer of 2005. I hadn't been looking for a girl that far away, but she was gorgeous and seemed perfect, so after mailing and talking on the phone with her for 3 months, I sponsored her visa to Stockholm and she spent 10 days here. As it happens, it didn't quite work out....I guess she was just looking for a free trip :))) She now lives in the US and still calls me every month or so.
Still, having almost suffered a stress attack trying to get her a visa and working my ass off at the same time, I knew about visa procedures. Otherwise, I was pretty naive about scammers as well.
My first contact with a scammer was in March 2006, quite a famous one called Ekaterina Torbeeva wrote to me (also had several different personas). Now that I know better, I can see the scam signs in the first line of her mail....'I the honest, faithful girl'...or something like that. You can find her/him in the dating scammer from Kazan threads on this site. She's/He's actually from Cheboksary. She tried to scam me for visa money, but since I knew she couldn't get a visa without tickets as well, I wrote to her pointing it out, but of course she totally ignored me (not surprising since scammers never read the mails anyway, not until after the money letter anyway).
She had given me an address in Kazan, so I sent her some flowers and the address turned out to be fake. After that, I learned how to trace an IP and discovered that she wasn't in Kazan at all, because she was using a Mari-El dial up (and sometimes a proxy in Germany). I started writing to her in Russian and accused her of being a scammer, presenting all the evidence, form letters, not answering direct questions, asking for money for a 'visa'. She denied it and a girl even phoned me up one evening and said she was Ekaterina, but I still posted her letters and pics on every anti-scam site I could find. I suppose I must have come across delphifaq when I googled the name Ekaterina Torbeeva, but I don't think I posted anything at the time because I can't find it now anyway.
In the meantime, I've been to Russia twice to see another girl, we are now engaged, and she had her residency interview at the Swedish embassy in Moscow about 10 days ago. I also work twice a week teaching English to the diplomats at the Russian Embassy, so I know quite a lot about Russia and Russian dating scammers.
I still think it's worth coming here a few times a week, and post info and any advice I can give, though by the time a guy finds this site, it's often too late.
It's good to hear that you made out pretty well thus far and I appreciate your postings for the used like me. I know that it's after the fact, however, I fell a sense of solitude and closure from this site- allowing me to express my situation without everyone saying 'I told you so!'
I can totally relate to your story. I just ended this long-term relationship that was really bad for a while (5 yrs); I just finished college and was looking for work, not finding anything with real pay either. So then I tried to get into law school but couldn't get a high enough score on the LSAT. Suddenly, I got a letter from a law school in Michigan telling me they had a week long program for selected students with excellent writing samples. So I had to leave the job I did have to go out there, but after the course ended I wasn’t admitted into the program- that truly affected my confidence. At this point I returned home with no job, failed to get into law school, and now had this girl I was living with call me a bum/deadbeat etc. on a day to day basis. Two months later I finally found a new job but my girlfriend stopped taking her Prozac and kicked me out of her place.
Fast forward to now (7 months later). Here is Olesya and all her promises of a great future together with endless love and passion. I was so desperate for anything resembling a promising relationship. I even overlooked the warning signs- a false origination address, the strange formatted emails, unanswered questions, etc. I just wish I was cognizant of exactly how these scam artists operated prior to. I mean, I knew they were out there, but I didn’t have the information of how they 1.) find you, and 2.) bait you through the process to get your money. And damn, it took 45 emails w/pics to get steal 250 bucks from me- WTF!! I wish they had only taken 2-3 weeks like most.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I've been to Ann Arbor several times, every time reluctant to leave. One of Google co-founders is from there, will soon be another branch there. If only someone offers me food for googling ...
But some other opportunity will open up for you. We learn from failures. It takes time to turn a failure into a bread-winner. It's important to ward off detractors, who after all are perfect, never having made any mistakes in their own lives. I had several of those throught my life, who choose to run for cover, while I wear proudly and honestly all my purple-patches that once were failures, but really meant as impetuses to move me.
I'm sure you'll be informing newbies, how not to reapeat mistakes you already have made, which is as important as knowing how to do productive homework.
Would you like to post your scammer's Header, less your personal info? At least that will be available for the next googler.
Have a great day!

Yeah, I already posted the photos on the previous page and under 'Tatyana.' That's where I found the same fraudulent letters.

THE SCAM ARTIST VANISHES AFTER THE MONEY IS RECEIVED. BE WARNED, THEY FOUND ME THROUGH MATCH.COM.

Brian...the only difference between you and me is that I was just lucky not to send any money. And I'm not here to rub it in. Some people post 'you should have known better than to get scammed', but that's just unfair. We all have different circumstances and anybody can make a mistake. The scammers know which buttons to push.
Anyway like everybody else, I thought my first scammer was an actual girl. Even when I got suspicious and started doing some research, I still thought about sending her some money anyway...I mean a poor Russian girl scamming for money, what's 400 bucks to me? I could send it to help her out, maybe stop her scamming. But then I discovered that 80-90% of scammers are guys, working in small gangs, so I kept my money in my wallet.
