Are you an American or Western European man exchanging emails with a girl from Russia? I was contacted by a girl who turned out to be a scammer. Reader Derrick put together some great advice how to detect scammers.
I only have one advice (#8) to add: If a Russian girl tells you that she will get a visa to the USA instead of inviting you, that is - under the current immigration law - a SURE sign that SHE LIES.

Here is the process how a Russian woman can come to the USA:

If she is considered a relatively young/ attractive woman (let's say under 40, hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings here), then there is virtually NO CHANCE THAT SHE GETS A TOURIST VISA TO THE USA. First the Russian Federation will not allow her to leave the country. Then, even if she was getting out, the USA will deny her admission. The reasoning is that she is considered a risk. How could she not be a risk? If she had family in Russia (husband, children) or a valuable business or real estate. Most likely the woman who writes you will be considered a risk. The only way for her to get a visa into the USA is this procedure:

  1. the foreign man visits her in her native area in Russia
  2. they get engaged during such a visit - take photos of the 2 of you together
  3. he flies back and applies for a K-1 visa. A K-1 visa is also known as Fiancee visa, used for marriage-based immigration
  4. once the K1 visa is granted, the girl can enter the USA and stay there for 3 months. By the end of these 3 months you HAVE to GET MARRIED or the girl has to go back home.
  5. if you get married, the girl gets a greencard and can work
  6. after 3 years of marriage, the girl can apply for a US citizenship. That's when they interview you to find out if it's a real marriage. She also has to answer some questions about US history, political system, etc etc.

Here are Derrick's tricks (1-7) that he uses immediately from the start:
  1. GOOGLE or websearch the first part of the scammers first emails and/or 'profile'. SEE HOW MANY OTHER SITES their listed on! RECORD THOSE SITES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. THAT alone can give you a good idea IF your dealing with a scammer OR not.
  2. GOOGLE or websearch the return email address. See how many 'hits' come from that search and also note all the sites. (many times you'll see the email end up on a 'scammers list') IF YOU FIND THE EMAIL ADDRESS LISTED ON A SCAMMER LIST - don't bother further, your only fooling yourself - no matter what excuse they might give you.
  3. FROM THE START - ASK FOR SPECIFIC INFOMATION! A full name, address, phone number - something. OFFER THE SAME in exchange, except make it a P.O. box and a CELL PHONE rental card that will protect your identity. If you see your requests ignored, which you usually will, don't waste your time further.
  4. ALWAYS ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS that would REQUIRE A SPECIFIC ANSWER outside the use of FORM LETTERS. IF YOU FIND your questions go unaddress in your reply emails from 'them/her' - YOUR DEALING WITH A SCAMMER. Again, don't bother further.
  5. DON'T WAIT 6 MONTHS to offer to talk with the PROSPECT by phone! WHAT A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME! IF THERE IS CHEMISTRY OR APPEARS 'INTEREST' BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU - then sieze the opportunity. ARRANGE A PHONE CALL! International rates to Russia and most places are reasonably cheap. IF YOU GET THE REPLY ' I'M SO POOR I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO A PHONE' - drop the whole thing, your only wasting your time and WILL BE SCAMMED at some point in the future.
  6. PHOTO FLOOD! IF IT/SHE/HIM/THEM - LOOK TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE - THEN IT PROBABLY IS! MOST IF NOT ALL OF THE SCAMMES USE PHOTOS OF MODELS IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES TO POSE ON THE NET IN THEIR PROFILE(s)! Consider this - IF THEY LOOK like a MODEL then tell you they're so poor they don't have access to a phone - YOUR BEING SCAMMED!

ASK FOR A SPECIAL PHOTO TO BE TAKEN. IF YOU SENT YOURS, HAVE THEM TAKE A PHOTO SHOWING THEM HOLDING UP YOUR PHOTO IN THE PICTURE! That is a good 'scammer filter' - even the most adept with Photoshop will easily be spoted.

BETTER STILL - ASK THEM TO TAKE A PHOTO THAT SHOWS THEM HOLDING A CURRENT NEWPAPER OF YOUR CHOICE OR THEIR COUNTRY, WITH A RESOLUTION THAT YOU CAN READ THE DATE! NOT some low grade - grainy photo! FEW WILL EVER DO THAT.

AT THE LEAST - ASK THEM FOR A PHOTO of them wearing a specific combination of clothes and/or colors - something different then the usual 'model clothing' - most use to send out. OR AN OBJECT - TOASTER, ELECTRIC CLOCK, BY A COUCH, IN A ROCKING CHAIR something that would be very hard to use PHOTOSHOP to just PUT in another FILE PHOTO.

*** IF this person is real or sincere, they won't mind doing this for you! ALSO - offer to do the same for their comfort also - that is only fair.
  7. IF THINGS GET SERIOUS - then ASK THEM TO DELETE ALL THEIR OTHER WEB PROFILE POSTS! CHECK ON THE ONES YOU NOTED EARLIER! Again, IF THEIR SINCERE - they will - happily as your their DREAM and future!
  8. If she talks about getting a visa or that she needs money to get a travel visa to the USA, she lies. See the proper course of action described at the top.

God help us we are lonely suckers. I wish a scammer would come clean and tell us how the whole system works.....The scammer that is trying to scam me is so hot that I would forgive her for being a criminal and just marry her so I could bang her for a couple of years.....Yeah she gets a green card and I get laid with a fricken supermodel.........Trump said it right: LIFE SUCKS. I would add sometimes though.
Don't let them take your money dudes.

Hello Friends!
Some days ago, What i did was. I just extracted all the email ID's from the absoluteagengy website. I registered in absoluteagency website but i am not a paid member. I wrote emails for about 40 emails as I got for free. But surprisingly I received mails from beautiful russian girls. I got something like 20 responses. For 2 days I was happy. I was getting mails one by one. On third day I was shocked. I got same content from another girl also. The girls are mentioning some nonsence and when I respond to them they are giving a mail which has not even a single converstaion matching. No link at all. I found all are fake. But one is real I guess. I am not sure. But our correspondence is going on from more than 1 month. Finally the game will be over or might continue as the girl was saying she has holidays in June and will lead with me. and wants money to make passport, visa and tickets. She is from Yoshkar-ola. So, the game will be over in a couple of days. I will not give her a single cent. I stay in Sweden. I do not know whether the russian government will allow her to come here on a tourist visa or not? I am an Indian. I will not go to Russia. As, there are some racists. Anything might happen for me. I asked her to come to Sweden. But, I don't know what will happen. can anyone mail me directly to my mail by giving me some suggestions to sverige_johan@yahoo.com I will be thankful to you.

Hello!

This is my continuation mail. I got the emails from Absolute agengy for free. The next day the agency person deleted the mails from the girls profiles. I think the website person is also cheating my sending his own mails and scamming.

Larisa yet again - note that she's toned down the 'model' look (but it's definitely her, as she sent me the 'model' pictures also). Buyer beware......

concerning ELINA LANINA ( MISLONELY@YANDEX.RU ) , THIS SOUNDS ALOT LIKE ONE CHICK THAT I'M TALKING TO .WE HAVE SPOKEN FOR ALMOST A YEAR AND SHE HAS ON A COUPLE OF OCCASIONS BECOME QUITE IRRITATED THAT I WILL NOT SEND MONEY.THE REASON THAT I WILL NOT SEND MONEY IS FOR THE SAME REASON THAT YOU RAN INTO .I HAD ASKED FOR OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS SHOWING HER PICTURE AND SHE WOULD NOT COME UP WITH THEM.SHE KEPT SAYING THAT THEY WERE AT HER TRAVEL AGENT. OVER MANY MONTHS AND ASKING SEVERAL TIMES , I FINALLY GOT HER TO GIVE ME HER TRAVEL AGENTS EMAIL ADDRESS.THE TRAVEL AGENT WAS VERY HELPFUL IN SENDING THE DOCUMENTS THAT I REQUESTED AND EVEN ANSWERED A FEW QUESTIONS THAT I HAD .THEN I STARTED LOOKING OVER THE DOCUMENTS AND FOUND COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BIRTHDATES ON EACH ONE .( GO FIGURE )
AFTER TWO MONTHS OF ASKING WHY THE DIFFERENCES IN THE BIRTHDATES AND WAITING FOR AN ANSWER , IT STILL HASN'T COME .I HAVE CLEARLY TOLD HER , ON MANY DIFFERENT OCCASIONS , THAT IF I DON'T GET MY QUESTIONS ANSWERED AND ANSWERED TO MY LIKING , THEN I WILL NOT SEND MONEY.
IT HAS BEEN REALLY HARD NOT TO SEND MONEY , BUT LIKE YOUR SITUATION , SHE IS A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN TUGGING AT YOUR HEART STRINGS.
MY ATTITUDE IS , IF IT'S FOR REAL AND IT'S IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO HER , SHE WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.AS HARD AS IT MAY BE , BECAUSE OF HOW BEAUTIFUL SOME OF THEM ARE AND NO MATTER HOW CONVINCING THEY MAY SEEM ,TAKE THE CAREFUL APPROACH.TREAT IT AS JUST ANOTHER BUSINESS TRANSACTION/POSSIBLE SCAM , ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS , AND NEVER SEND MONEY UNLESS YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY SURE.
I AM STILL DOING SOME INVESTIGATING ON THE HONEY THAT I'VE BEEN TALKING TO AND AS I FIND OUT MORE INFO , I WILL POST IT .
ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND ( U.S. RESIDENTS ) THAT THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A TOURIST VISA TO THE U.S.
THE ONLY WAY THAT A WOMAN CAN LEAVE RUSSIA IS IF YOU FLY THERE , AND AGREE TO MARRY HER AND BRING HER BACK .( LOTS OF PAPERWORK AND MONEY )
THE NEXT QUESTION IS : DO YOU WANT TO RISK THAT AS SOON AS YOU BRING HER BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY THAT SHE WILL TAKE OFF AND DISAPPEAR.
I LIVE IN CANADA , AND IF I MARRY HER AND BRING HER BACK TO MY COUNTRY AND SHE DECIDES TO LEAVE ME , IF SHE COLLECTS ANY KIND OF GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE
SUCH AS WELFARE OR UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE , IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT ALL THAT MONEY THAT SHE RECEIVES COMES DIRECTLY OUT OF MY POCKET.
ALL BECAUSE I SPONSORED HER AND BROUGHT HER TO MY COUNTRY , SHE NOW AND FOREVER BECOMES MY RESPONSIBILITY. ( MAKES YA REALLY STOP AND TAKE A STEP BACK , DOESN'T IT ? ) HOW SURE ARE YOU OF THIS PERSON YOU ARE TALKING TO .
THIS COULD BE A LIFETIME DECISION THAT YOU ARE MAKING OR MAYBE YOU'LL JUST GET SCAMMED FOR MONEY .EITHER WAY, IS THIS TRULY WHAT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE AND WILL IT BE WORTH IT TO TAKE THE RISK ?
I HAVE ACTUALLY TALKED TO A GUY WHO WENT THROUGH THE PROCESS OF GOING OVER AND MARRYING A BEAUTIFUL RUSSIAN WOMAN , AND WITHIN 6 MONTHS AFTER RETURNING , THEY WERE GETTING DIVORCED .
HIS ADVICE TO ME WAS : NEVER , NEVER , NEVER , TRUST A RUSSIAN WOMAN .
I WOULD LIKE TO BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE ALWAYS EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE , BUT SERIOUSLY , IS IT ALL WORTH IT? HE IS TALKING FROM EXPERIENCE.
IN THE MEANTIME , I WILL CONTINUE TO TALK TO MY BEAUTIFUL RUSSIAN 'FRIEND' AND THATS AS FAR AS IT'S GOING TO GO UNLESS I GET THE ANSWERS THAT I'M LOOKING FOR .GUYS , JUST USE YOUR LOGICAL MIND AND TRY NOT TO LET YOUR HEART GET INVOLVED UNTIL SHE PROVES TO YOU IN SOME WAY , THAT SHE DESERVES YOUR LOVE AND TRUST .

TAKE CARE AND GOOD LUCK , GUYS.

Clearly, this girl is real. I got another girl to create a similar picture. That is not the whole story. If she is asking for money, it is a scam, point blank. Good Russian women will not do that and they will give you their mailing address - even if you do not ask for it. I am keeping my chats up with mine, whom I will call XYZ (so as not to reveal with I am doing with her), even though I know she is a scam. This is to continue to gather information so that we can come down hard on this motherfucker.

However, consider the following. 1. She may be being paid to do this and not actually understand what is going on. 2. She may be in cooperation with the scam artist.

The clear signs of a scam are: (if even 2 or 3 of these are true, it is a scam)

- asking for money
- never giving you an address
- not answering questions
- not observing your answers to questions she has asked of you
- if you do send money, some previously unknown requirement, that costs more money, so you have to send more to her.
- if you do send more money, and the arrival date is planned, some tragedy that prevents her from arriving: some gangsters got to me, my grandmother died, my grandmother needs a heart operation.
- when you ask her for copies of her ticket, visa, etc., either outrage at the question or there is some outrageous reason why she cannot. 'They are at the embassy for protection and I need to show $1600 to get them back (but the gangsters stole this from me).'
- any time you ask for something specific, such as about tickets, documents, flight details, copies of this or that, then either: outrage; explicit refusal; simply ignoring your request; or I don't have enough money to copy them.

Incidentally, to this last excuse I said, Fuck it, I'll send you the copy money. I did; enough to make the copies. You know the answer when she got the money, 'I forgot, the documents are at the embassy and I cannot get to them because I have to show them $1600 to get the money and Igor and his goonies stole this money from me.' In other words, this is all a line of bullshit. I sent the money to prove to myself it was a scam. I asked her to have this tailor-made picture to prove to me she was real and not just some old sterile couple running a scam from their apartment. She sent me the picture but the events I just described happened right after it. I also sent her letters from another email address at the same time this was going on and got the same replies I got when I first corresponded with her.

You want to prove this is a scam another way!! Open up another email account, say Yahoo. Send her an email: 'You contacted me some time ago. I was busy. I'm free now. I'd like to correspond with you. Please write back. etc, etc.' If you get the same letters your first got, it is a total scam without doubt.

I do not know what has gone on between this lady and you. But heed my advice carefully and look at the signs. They are nearly infallible. I know, I learned the hard way. Again, I am keeping up my dialogue with XYZ so as to gather as much information as possible before blowing the whistle, and I will blow it and put this cunt in jail. I will hang either him from his balls or her from her tits, or both -- whoever is doing this to me and others like me.
