Is this Russian girl scamming me? How to recognize scammers

Are you an American or Western European man exchanging emails with a girl from Russia? I was contacted by a girl who turned out to be a scammer. Reader Derrick put together some great advice how to detect scammers.
I only have one advice (#8) to add: If a Russian girl tells you that she will get a visa to the USA instead of inviting you, that is - under the current immigration law - a SURE sign that SHE LIES.

Here is the process how a Russian woman can come to the USA:

If she is considered a relatively young/ attractive woman (let's say under 40, hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings here), then there is virtually NO CHANCE THAT SHE GETS A TOURIST VISA TO THE USA. First the Russian Federation will not allow her to leave the country. Then, even if she was getting out, the USA will deny her admission. The reasoning is that she is considered a risk. How could she not be a risk? If she had family in Russia (husband, children) or a valuable business or real estate. Most likely the woman who writes you will be considered a risk. The only way for her to get a visa into the USA is this procedure:

  1. the foreign man visits her in her native area in Russia
  2. they get engaged during such a visit - take photos of the 2 of you together
  3. he flies back and applies for a K-1 visa. A K-1 visa is also known as Fiancee visa, used for marriage-based immigration
  4. once the K1 visa is granted, the girl can enter the USA and stay there for 3 months. By the end of these 3 months you HAVE to GET MARRIED or the girl has to go back home.
  5. if you get married, the girl gets a greencard and can work
  6. after 3 years of marriage, the girl can apply for a US citizenship. That's when they interview you to find out if it's a real marriage. She also has to answer some questions about US history, political system, etc etc.

Here are Derrick's tricks (1-7) that he uses immediately from the start:
  1. GOOGLE or websearch the first part of the scammers first emails and/or 'profile'. SEE HOW MANY OTHER SITES their listed on! RECORD THOSE SITES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. THAT alone can give you a good idea IF your dealing with a scammer OR not.
  2. GOOGLE or websearch the return email address. See how many 'hits' come from that search and also note all the sites. (many times you'll see the email end up on a 'scammers list') IF YOU FIND THE EMAIL ADDRESS LISTED ON A SCAMMER LIST - don't bother further, your only fooling yourself - no matter what excuse they might give you.
  3. FROM THE START - ASK FOR SPECIFIC INFOMATION! A full name, address, phone number - something. OFFER THE SAME in exchange, except make it a P.O. box and a CELL PHONE rental card that will protect your identity. If you see your requests ignored, which you usually will, don't waste your time further.
  4. ALWAYS ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS that would REQUIRE A SPECIFIC ANSWER outside the use of FORM LETTERS. IF YOU FIND your questions go unaddress in your reply emails from 'them/her' - YOUR DEALING WITH A SCAMMER. Again, don't bother further.
  5. DON'T WAIT 6 MONTHS to offer to talk with the PROSPECT by phone! WHAT A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME! IF THERE IS CHEMISTRY OR APPEARS 'INTEREST' BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU - then sieze the opportunity. ARRANGE A PHONE CALL! International rates to Russia and most places are reasonably cheap. IF YOU GET THE REPLY ' I'M SO POOR I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO A PHONE' - drop the whole thing, your only wasting your time and WILL BE SCAMMED at some point in the future.
  6. PHOTO FLOOD! IF IT/SHE/HIM/THEM - LOOK TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE - THEN IT PROBABLY IS! MOST IF NOT ALL OF THE SCAMMES USE PHOTOS OF MODELS IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES TO POSE ON THE NET IN THEIR PROFILE(s)! Consider this - IF THEY LOOK like a MODEL then tell you they're so poor they don't have access to a phone - YOUR BEING SCAMMED!

ASK FOR A SPECIAL PHOTO TO BE TAKEN. IF YOU SENT YOURS, HAVE THEM TAKE A PHOTO SHOWING THEM HOLDING UP YOUR PHOTO IN THE PICTURE! That is a good 'scammer filter' - even the most adept with Photoshop will easily be spoted.

BETTER STILL - ASK THEM TO TAKE A PHOTO THAT SHOWS THEM HOLDING A CURRENT NEWPAPER OF YOUR CHOICE OR THEIR COUNTRY, WITH A RESOLUTION THAT YOU CAN READ THE DATE! NOT some low grade - grainy photo! FEW WILL EVER DO THAT.

AT THE LEAST - ASK THEM FOR A PHOTO of them wearing a specific combination of clothes and/or colors - something different then the usual 'model clothing' - most use to send out. OR AN OBJECT - TOASTER, ELECTRIC CLOCK, BY A COUCH, IN A ROCKING CHAIR something that would be very hard to use PHOTOSHOP to just PUT in another FILE PHOTO.

*** IF this person is real or sincere, they won't mind doing this for you! ALSO - offer to do the same for their comfort also - that is only fair.
  7. IF THINGS GET SERIOUS - then ASK THEM TO DELETE ALL THEIR OTHER WEB PROFILE POSTS! CHECK ON THE ONES YOU NOTED EARLIER! Again, IF THEIR SINCERE - they will - happily as your their DREAM and future!
  8. If she talks about getting a visa or that she needs money to get a travel visa to the USA, she lies. See the proper course of action described at the top.

More news from Agapi. He just doesn't quit. Had the nerve to tell me that the crappy passport hack is for real. He has, of course, ignored all my requests for information and confirmation of info given. He has also not, of course, addressed any of the discrepancies I found in the emails (mother died 2 years ago, but now miraculously alive again! and more...) Read on.

'I just found an opportunity to write to you and I want to say a big thank you for what you did not help me and refused me. I ask you to send me your help tomorrow morning so I immediately got to dinner and all your help paid and went home. I promise soon as I get home and return you all double. Now I do not have access to the account and this can get your help only through western union. I already told you the exact inofrmatsiya and here it is again. First Name-AGAPI. Last Name - PAGIOULA
country: Greece. City: THESSALONIKI, and I made a copy of my passport and send it to you so that you make it easier to transfer to complete my information. and I ask you to send your help early in the morning. it is very important that I finished there and went home. and I pray to God that I could come as early as Thursday to visit you Clamps know each other in person. kisses'

Any suggestions on how to continue this? Wonder how long I can stretc this out?

Thanks, OJAS, for the info. Very helpful. I think I will write her and say that I have confirmed the passport is valid. I now want to meet her and bring her the cash she is looking for and also other gifts to express my love for her. This one will take a while to craft...

The passport has first name in Greek and Latin characters

But the last name is both times in Latin characters, LOL! :-)

Several other fields are missing the Greek entries in the data column!

Agapi sent me this one recently also. Didn't send the letter about being stopped in Latvia. Skipped it and went right to thanking me for 'helping' her out.

Interesting exchange with Agapi (or Boris, or whomever) this weekend. I responded to her email (posted above with the passport picture) and she and I are continuing to write. Read on:
August 4, 2014 (from me)
'Hello, Agapi,
This is my first chance to write to you since last week. I have been so busy over the weekend trying to make plans for our first time to meet. The Western Union is closed today, so I will have to go tomorrow to send the money I promised. The rest of the cash money I will deliver to you in person and also some presents I purchased for you. I have some vacation time and I must come to you. Where shall I stay? Is it OK, in your country, for men to stay with single women or shall I stay in a hotel near you? I do not want to hurt your honour, but I do want so much to hold you.
Waiting for your reply. Please do not hurt me again...
M'
(from Agapi, same day):
'my dear, I waited for help from you today but it did not happen. I have completely no money to live here and I do not I pay to access the Internet. and yet I was told that if I did not until Thursday will pay a fine my load I will not give up. will be confiscated. it will be a complete failure in my life and my business forever. my dear. I very much hope that you will help me in the morning. I can not trace the correspondence. I ask you again to write me your number, I'll call you. I hope I can find a way to call. and I pray to God that we were together at the end of the week. Kisses'
(from me, same day):
'My love, my Agapi,
I want to hold you, feel you close to me, and taste all of you. I will bring you ALL the money in person before Thursday. I just need to know where to meet you. I want to do this to show my sincerity and my love for you. I have forgiven you of everything. I just want to be with you. What hotel are you staying in and what is your room? I will come to you soon and hold you close to me and your worries will be over.
Tell me where I can meet you. My travel agent is waiting to issue my tickets.
M
ps: please send me another sexy picture or more...'
Eagerly waiting her response. Wonder if she'll keep writing even after the Thursday deadline passes...

Certainly NOT giving her my number .

The saga with Agapi continues. Boris is sounding more and more desperate...

August 6, 2014 (I wrote, after telling her (as above) that I would bring her cash in person)
'Agapi,
I am waiting for your answer. Perhaps you do not need the money as much as you said? There is still time for us to meet in person...
M'

[and then later on that day I also wrote the following]:
'Agapi,
I am very disappointed that you have not written back to me sooner. It is now too late for me to travel to you and to give you ALL the money you need in person. I was so looking forward to meeting you, helping you through this trouble you are in, and finally being able to spend time together.
However, I went to Western Union, showed them your passport and they helped me to create a transfer to you electronically. I have sent $200.00 USD. Once I know that you received it, I can send more. The information you will need is as follows:
My first and last name on the form: Mark Spicer
Your name: Agapi Pagioula
Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN#): 564 698 3216
Test question: Where do you live?
Answer: Thessaloniki, Australia
I want us to be together very soon.
Mark'

August 7, 2014 (12:54 pm) [she wrote]
'my dear, $200 I was not saved. I do not that I can not do. I ask you to send the entire amount or take away all my morning.'

August 7, 2014 (1:34 pm) [she wrote]
'then
come and take me away. this must be done very quickly. I'm on vogzale. I have already told all. I'm waiting for you these days and I hope you can not pomogatm when you come here. thank you for what you did not leave me. Kisses'

August 7, 2014 (2:46 pm) [she wrote]
'my dear, I cried. I talked a lot. I could only pass the time until Tuesday. if you can not help me until Friday then I can go to jail. because it is a court. yang know what to do. please help me until Tuesday. I can not keep writing because I can not find a free internet. I'll see your answer soon as I can. I beg you to help me and when I come to you I'll show you and tell you how bad I was. yours and yours alone Agapi'

[I wrote the following response to her latest pleas]:
'Finally a letter (3 letters!) from you my sweet lovely Agapi! I am sorry that the $200 was not enough for you at the moment. I had the rest in cash that I was going to give you in person. But you delayed in writing back and the window of time available to come to you is closed. You also did not tell me to which city I should travel and which hotel you were staying in.
I still have time to come to you. Perhaps you could ask for an extension in time to pay the fine, because you are having difficulty locating sufficient money. Perhaps the $200 USD I sent can be used as a bribe for the official. I do not believe he is being honest with you. I contacted the Latvian embassy and they do not know about such a law. They want to know the name of the official so that they can investigate.
There is hope, my dear! I am confident this fine will be cancelled and you can go home soon. I want to come to you when you are home, so that I can meet your mother and see where you live.
I do not know what vogzale is.
Yours forever,
M'

It is very evident that Boris is not really reading my responses. He has not provided me with simple info I requested. He is also not writing to me by name as I requested (we are to be lovers so I thought that was reasonable). I will keep this going as long as I can. Let's see if he can keep Agapi out of jail!

Stay tuned...

This next snippet was actually sent somewhat after the (fake) Western Union transfer I sent to Agapi/Boris yesterday, and before the three short messages they sent to me (see post 2014-08-07, 14:29:21, above):

'My dearest Agapi,
I fear I have lost you over this money thing. I had the serious opportunity to to come to you in person and deliver all the cash that you needed (and more), but you did not respond. Perhaps you only wanted my money and had no interest in actually meeting and becoming lovers. Perhaps, someone else came to your aid. Once again, I do not know what to believe. I hope you will write back; I will wait for your return letter for a week and then I will move on. I will always treasure the special moments we had together (even though they were just in letters).
Many passionate kisses,
M'

I sent them this one this morning:

'My forever love,
I feel so bad about your situation. I want to help so much. I wanted to be able to help you in person but it seems you are not interested in that. That hurts me terribly, but I want to show that I am sincere and so I put the hurt aside. Please know that I would fly anywhere in the world to be with you my dearest Agapi.
Even though the man is cheating you, as I wrote in the last letter, I went to Western Union again and they helped me to create another transfer to you electronically. I have sent $800.00 USD. Now you have a total of $1,000. It is enough for the fine and also a little for living expenses. I hope this proves to you that I am sincere. The information you will need is as follows:
My first and last name on the form: Mark Spicer
Your name: Agapi Pagioula
Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN#): 642 984 2166
Test question: Who do you love?
Answer: Mark Spicer loves you too
I want us to be together very soon. I want to hold you and feel skin against skin.
Mark'

No more pictures coming, either. I guess they are mad at me!
Well, we will wait and see what comes next. Will Agapi go to jail? Will Boris leave her there? [wait, they are the same person]. Or will they cash in the two fake transfers and whisk Agapi away to safetly, and soon to my waiting arms (oi vey, who writes this stuff?)...

It would be laughable if it wasn't true and guys weren't being fleeced out of their money by these scum.
