Is this Russian girl scamming me? How to recognize scammers

Are you an American or Western European man exchanging emails with a girl from Russia? I was contacted by a girl who turned out to be a scammer. Reader Derrick put together some great advice how to detect scammers.
I only have one advice (#8) to add: If a Russian girl tells you that she will get a visa to the USA instead of inviting you, that is - under the current immigration law - a SURE sign that SHE LIES.

Here is the process how a Russian woman can come to the USA:

If she is considered a relatively young/ attractive woman (let's say under 40, hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings here), then there is virtually NO CHANCE THAT SHE GETS A TOURIST VISA TO THE USA. First the Russian Federation will not allow her to leave the country. Then, even if she was getting out, the USA will deny her admission. The reasoning is that she is considered a risk. How could she not be a risk? If she had family in Russia (husband, children) or a valuable business or real estate. Most likely the woman who writes you will be considered a risk. The only way for her to get a visa into the USA is this procedure:

  1. the foreign man visits her in her native area in Russia
  2. they get engaged during such a visit - take photos of the 2 of you together
  3. he flies back and applies for a K-1 visa. A K-1 visa is also known as Fiancee visa, used for marriage-based immigration
  4. once the K1 visa is granted, the girl can enter the USA and stay there for 3 months. By the end of these 3 months you HAVE to GET MARRIED or the girl has to go back home.
  5. if you get married, the girl gets a greencard and can work
  6. after 3 years of marriage, the girl can apply for a US citizenship. That's when they interview you to find out if it's a real marriage. She also has to answer some questions about US history, political system, etc etc.

Here are Derrick's tricks (1-7) that he uses immediately from the start:
  1. GOOGLE or websearch the first part of the scammers first emails and/or 'profile'. SEE HOW MANY OTHER SITES their listed on! RECORD THOSE SITES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. THAT alone can give you a good idea IF your dealing with a scammer OR not.
  2. GOOGLE or websearch the return email address. See how many 'hits' come from that search and also note all the sites. (many times you'll see the email end up on a 'scammers list') IF YOU FIND THE EMAIL ADDRESS LISTED ON A SCAMMER LIST - don't bother further, your only fooling yourself - no matter what excuse they might give you.
  3. FROM THE START - ASK FOR SPECIFIC INFOMATION! A full name, address, phone number - something. OFFER THE SAME in exchange, except make it a P.O. box and a CELL PHONE rental card that will protect your identity. If you see your requests ignored, which you usually will, don't waste your time further.
  4. ALWAYS ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS that would REQUIRE A SPECIFIC ANSWER outside the use of FORM LETTERS. IF YOU FIND your questions go unaddress in your reply emails from 'them/her' - YOUR DEALING WITH A SCAMMER. Again, don't bother further.
  5. DON'T WAIT 6 MONTHS to offer to talk with the PROSPECT by phone! WHAT A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME! IF THERE IS CHEMISTRY OR APPEARS 'INTEREST' BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU - then sieze the opportunity. ARRANGE A PHONE CALL! International rates to Russia and most places are reasonably cheap. IF YOU GET THE REPLY ' I'M SO POOR I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO A PHONE' - drop the whole thing, your only wasting your time and WILL BE SCAMMED at some point in the future.
  6. PHOTO FLOOD! IF IT/SHE/HIM/THEM - LOOK TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE - THEN IT PROBABLY IS! MOST IF NOT ALL OF THE SCAMMES USE PHOTOS OF MODELS IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES TO POSE ON THE NET IN THEIR PROFILE(s)! Consider this - IF THEY LOOK like a MODEL then tell you they're so poor they don't have access to a phone - YOUR BEING SCAMMED!

ASK FOR A SPECIAL PHOTO TO BE TAKEN. IF YOU SENT YOURS, HAVE THEM TAKE A PHOTO SHOWING THEM HOLDING UP YOUR PHOTO IN THE PICTURE! That is a good 'scammer filter' - even the most adept with Photoshop will easily be spoted.

BETTER STILL - ASK THEM TO TAKE A PHOTO THAT SHOWS THEM HOLDING A CURRENT NEWPAPER OF YOUR CHOICE OR THEIR COUNTRY, WITH A RESOLUTION THAT YOU CAN READ THE DATE! NOT some low grade - grainy photo! FEW WILL EVER DO THAT.

AT THE LEAST - ASK THEM FOR A PHOTO of them wearing a specific combination of clothes and/or colors - something different then the usual 'model clothing' - most use to send out. OR AN OBJECT - TOASTER, ELECTRIC CLOCK, BY A COUCH, IN A ROCKING CHAIR something that would be very hard to use PHOTOSHOP to just PUT in another FILE PHOTO.

*** IF this person is real or sincere, they won't mind doing this for you! ALSO - offer to do the same for their comfort also - that is only fair.
  7. IF THINGS GET SERIOUS - then ASK THEM TO DELETE ALL THEIR OTHER WEB PROFILE POSTS! CHECK ON THE ONES YOU NOTED EARLIER! Again, IF THEIR SINCERE - they will - happily as your their DREAM and future!
  8. If she talks about getting a visa or that she needs money to get a travel visa to the USA, she lies. See the proper course of action described at the top.

ADELE!
I misunderstood your post on the last page. I thought that the Sweetberry address was yours so I mailed all my anti-scam info to the scammer!!

If your friend has already lost 3000 bucks, this is all a bit after the fact, but I'm posting the mail I sent you here....all of this info can be found in the welcome page/ primer for newbies just below this post!!

Hi Adele,
I understand your dilemma and I'm sending as much information as I have available (quite a lot) on the subject of US visas, Russian dating scams, and real Russian girls etc.

First of all, there a 0% chance of this person actually turning up in the USA. It's a complete scam and you can find dozens of examples of this 'work visa' scam on Delphifaq. There is, in fact, such as thing as a work visa - it's called an H1-B visa, I believe. (I'm not American and I'm not 100% familiar with the rules, only those of the Schengen states)...but I know it's very rare to be granted one and, in any case, US and European visas are never granted without plane tickets having been purchased in advance and/or hotel rooms, visible means of support, or sponsorship....ESPECIALLY THE FINANCIAL SUPPORT! I.E... if a visa applicant doesn't have any money in the bank or a job, they won't get into the US. Since this scammer claims not to have any, you see why I assume it's a scam.

Here's the US embassy website in moscow, so you can do some research of your own:
USA: http://moscow.usemb..=reqvdocs

As regards Russian scams and scammers:

The vast majority of Russian dating scammers are not women at all, but actually men, mostly students, working in organized cells - known as 'offices' in Russian scamming jargon - in or around Yoshkar Ola, the capital of Mari El republic, sometimes in Chuvashia....occasionally further afield.

Most scammers are VERY lazy and only looking for quick cash money. They use email extractor programs to get your mail addresses (if you don't have a profile on a dating site, that is)...for example:
http://www.webextractor.com/

..and multiple identities with copied form mails and spam programs on automatic reply, very often the BAT!, with which they can personalize small parts of each letter if necessary.
http://www.ritlabs...s/thebat/

They mostly won't read your mails until after the pay-off - known as the 'money letter'- because they don't have time, ie because they're mailing, and trying to scam, as many guys as they can (economies of scale).....and also because they're semi-literate lowlifes who can't speak much English anyway. They call this initial phase 'zakidka' -- which means 'fill 'em up' in Russian slang. IN OTHER WORDS, you can write almost anything in your replies and they won't notice, the scammers only get interested when they're curious to see if you've taken the bait.

It's virtually guaranteed that the girls in these scam pics aren't directly involved in the scamming because the scammers steal their pics from the internet or pay unsuspecting friends for them, or buy and exchange them on scammer websites. Mostly they steal them. (Once an experienced Russian scammer actually admitted to me that he stole all his pics from army-of-brides.com and mamba.ru). Occasionally they'll use a local girl for a pic set, usually a scammer groupie. Real female accomplices are otherwise only involved either to phone a guy up, for the sake of appearances, or to pick up the loot at Western Union.

And more recently, the majority of Russian scammers have started using proxy servers or IP spoofing to hide their real locations so ALL YOU REALLY NEED TO DO IS TRACE THEIR IP ADDRESS to confirm the scam! (if you haven't worked it out already, of course). Untraceable IP address = scam. Spam program the BAT! = 75% scam

Here's a link to a website in Chuvashia, explaining how it works there: http://www.cheboksa..mers.html

Here's a link to a Russian newspaper article that explains how it all works in Yoshkar Ola:
http://www.delphifa..#comments

AS REGARDS HOW TO TELL A SCAMMER FROM A REAL GIRL:

If several or more of the following scam characteristics apply to your Boris (the beautiful Russian 'girl' that is supposedly writing to you), resist the temptation to help 'the poor girl' by sending her money. You're really writing to a sleazy Russian guy sitting in a smoky room in Yoshkar Ola, with a bunch of other sleazy guys spamming indiscriminately on laptops .

# 'girl' writes to you first on a dating site...especially a free one (or an email appears out of nowhere in your mailbox). Real Russian girls are rarely so bold as to write to you first. (unless you're obviously very attractive or rich :))) They will often reply to your mails, but rarely take the initiative. It's the man who does the chasing in Russia. Plus, if they're looking for a partner, they generally prefer him to be Russian speaking and live in Russia. Much more convenient!

# doesn't answer direct questions (sometimes factual mistakes in the letter). Her replies should be exactly that...replies...however short they are.

# girl's much too young for you (or too good to be true/looks like a model/porno star)....although I have noticed a recent tendency for some scammers to use photos of slightly 'less attractive' girls as well.

# girl has some far-fetched excuses for you not visiting her in Russia (criminal city, not the Russian custom, terrorism, it's her dream to come to your country, etc). ALL BULLSHIT!! Actually, the normal way to meet a Russian girl is to visit her in her city first. Russian TV is full of documentaries about Russian girls who have emigrated and got murdered, abandoned, etcetc. They should usually want to meet you first before they gallivant off to your country.

# scammers rarely have children, but most of the real Russian women I've ever met on the internet did (except for Moscow career girls). It's often the reason that they're looking for a partner.

# photos are too revealing (can't be a respectable girl). Respectability is very important to most Russian women (especially Moscow career girls). They're hardly likely to send a half-naked photo to a virtual stranger on the internet. Think about it!

# most of the pics are old and a little bit faded with a curiously grainy quality that soon becomes quite easy to recognise (overuse?). Again a scammer admitted to me that low-quality photos are a key factor in his scamming. I found this curious because a serious Russian girl who's looking for a partner very often saves up and goes to a professional to have a studio set done (often corny ones posing with a chair etc), and/or borrows a digicam at least (dates should also be on the photos you receive). My fiancée did it. Russian girls aren't all that poor anymore, and if they seriously want to leave Russia, they know that posting cheap pics will only attract cheap guys.

# GIRL CLAIMS NOT TO HAVE A MOBILE PHONE. Very unlikely!!! fer f***'s sake.....do you know a single girl without a mobile phone? Even poor Russian girls can't do without one, they're much cheaper than in Europe and a Megafon telephone card doesn't cost that much either. You should be able to call her whenever you want. On the other hand, not having a landline or a desktop/laptop is very common.

# very long rambling/ecstatic form letters with a strange format, punctation and layout written in scamlish. (world's worst Babelfish translation)

# writes long letters everyday in English. How does she have time to write those long letters if she's working? And if she doesn't have a job, how can she afford a computer + internet connection? Even Internet cafés are relatively expensive in Russia. Anyway, most Russians outside Moscow can hardly speak a word of English. (What's the point of finding a girl you can't communicate with, at least on a basic level?) PLUS.. if she can't speak English, why does she have a non-cyrillic email account like gmail or yahoo? Most real Russians use mail.ru, yandex.ru or inbox.ru....though hotmail and yahoo are acceptable if she'll chat with you on messenger (preferably with a webcam).

# falls in 'love' very quickly. Don't let your ego, kind heart, loneliness or lust pull the wool over your eyes. She doesn't really know you. You could be an axe murderer for all she knows. As I mentioned, Russian TV is full of documentaries about Russian girls who have emigrated and got murdered, abandoned, etcetc.

# uses a proxy server to hide his/her location, ie a SOCKS server / GPRS Internet. if you can't trace 'her' IP, it's 100% scam.
THE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO IS TRACE HER IP ADDRESS. In fact, it's the only thing you need to do really.

MOST IMPORTANT...if you get this far:
# she asks for money for a tourist 'visa' and/or maybe tickets, ignoring the fact that IT'S VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR A SINGLE, POOR RUSSIAN GIRL TO GET A TOURIST VISA TO A WESTERN COUNTRY!
Most Russian girls outside Moscow and St Petersburg are quite poor, and immigration control would consider them an overstay risk. They would never let be let into your country without a healthy bank account.

She can get a SPONSORED visa with your help, but then she needs a personal letter of invitation from you, a copy of your passport, a proof of your residence in your home country, a completed sponsor's application form (also from you)....not including the documents that she has to fill in herself. She also needs a job in Russia, a letter from her employer and insurance. All of these documents she has to drop off at your national embassy in Moscow WITH PREPAID TICKETS and wait about 10 working days. These are the rules for the Schengen countries anyway...the USA and Canada are almost as, if not more, complicated. Anyway, a normal TOURIST visa + travel costs + hotel rooms would set her back 2000+ US dollars for a trip to the US. She should be asking you for a lot of money! Why should it be so easy for a gorgeous sexy Russian girl just to jump on a plane and fall into bed with you? Anyway, no respectable Russian girl would ask directly for money, but might accept some if you insisted.

NB...you should check your national embassy website in Moscow for visa prices and procedures.

There are many variations on the scams, some quite slight. Some scammers claim to 'have a visa' already and need money for tickets, a last-minute medical examination, etcetc. Some claim that their mother needs a last-minute operation, etcetc. A few more patient and professional scammers will take months before they hit you with the money letter (though if you follow my tips, you should be able to spot the scammers before then). There are even a few real girls scamming, and professional gold-diggers (mostly in the Ukraine). One or two of them are very bold, and not even afraid to use their true identities. These scammers are harder to spot, and there is no easy way to identify them, all you can do is use your instincts and common sense, and DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

and, of course, a golden rule: DON'T SEND MONEY...unless you're 100% sure she's real.

Another ground rule: if you are looking for a Russian wife/partner, you must be prepared to travel to Russia to meet her. You also need to behave generously towards her; after all, you need to prove that you can support here (and her kids) if she migrates to your country. But if she turns out to be a professional gold-digger, which has never happened to me personally or anyone I know (but I know it does happen), you should try to be philosophical and treat it as an exotic trip to a foreign country, have fun anyway, and try not to waste too much money on her.

There are actually hundreds of perfectly nice Russian girls in Russia but you have to be prepared to go and get them. Chercher la femme. It certainly worked for me.

To be honest adele, if youR friend is determined to get himself scammed, there's not much you can do about it.

Please feel free to reply if you have any questions

Finding the IP address in Yahoo! Mail

1. Log into your Yahoo! mail with your username and password.
2. Click on Inbox or whichever folder you have stored your mail in.
3. Open the mail.
4. If you can't see the headers above the mail message, your headers are not displayed. To display the headers,
* Click on 'Options' in the top-right corner
* In the 'Mail Options' page, click on 'General Preferences'
* Scroll down to Messages where you have the Headers option
* Make sure that 'Show all headers on incoming messages' is selected
* Click on the Save button
* Go back to the mails and open that mail
5. You should now see the headers.
6. Look for Received: from followed by the IP address between square brackets [ ]. For example [202.65.138.109]
This is the IP address of the sender.
If there are lots of Received: from with IP addresses, select the IP address in the last pattern. If there are no instances of Received: from with the IP address, select the first IP address in X-Originating-IP.
8. Trace the IP address of the sender using http://www.ripe.net..erl/whois

An illustrative example on how we help delphi users

Someone seeks help in delphi with gmail and IP
Enter these 2 words in the search box, (blue banner at the top of this page)
There are 98 hits, but one of them (seventh) says Comment on Primer for first ... draws my curiosity and I hover the mouse, not yet click and check the status bar, the bottom-most on Internet Explorer.
I want to capure the URL, since the post has 17103 characters, I will return later to this URL
With a right-click on this hit, I check properties
Holding the mouse button and dragging the mouse over the URL highlights the URL
<CTRL>C copies this URL
On a Notepad <CTRL>V to paste the URL and save to a flash drive
http://www.delphifa..p=0#63955
When posted delphi will interpret it, contracting with two dots .. rendering copy / paste useless for contracted URLs
Insert a blank space before colon in the same URL
http ://www.delphifaq.com/faq/russian_marriage_scams/f2412.shtml?p=0#63955
This enables copy / paste to the address bar since the URL is valid after deleting the inserted blank space

I plan to return to 17103 characters at a more convenient time, for now, under time pressure, I want to open the one with the fewest characters
There is one with 600 characters, but these 4 lines did not help me
I could try the next with 724 characters, going in the ascending order on the number of charaters from the hits

But I might actually be trying unsuccessfully too many with fewest characters, I decide to try the primer link after all, see what happens. (Since 600 characters were 4 lines 17103 would be about 114 lines or 3 screens and I really don't plan on reading all of it since I can always return to it from my saved file in my flash drive)

I open that primer link and on the Edit menu, find the word gmail repeatedly
The second Find is about Header
I read whatever interested me to answer my questions, planning to return later since I have already saved this URL on my flash drive

I later noticed someone sought the same for yahoo, I would have proceeded in a like manner; Or start with the delphi search for 3 words gmail IP yahoo that would have narrowed the number of hits.

When you are at the primer thread, you could also help with my spam request (3 lines second last post on the initial page). There is a 15 posts per page limit in delphi, otherwise the pages will take forever to load. When important newbie info gets pushed way down by irresponsible posts on that thread, it makes it that much harder to find info on that thread. Please refrain from posting for example compliments on that thread. On the same primer thread, in its next page the top 2 posts (including mine) are not strictly for general newbie information. Please hit the Spam button on those 2 as well

Thanks to you all for your time reading this post and helping cleaning out primer thread for newbies

I posted a few pages back with a picture of a red head girl named Elena having coffee. She has just messaged me asking why I posted her letters and her picture here, asking 'do you think you have a moral right to put personal correspondence on the internet'.

Apparently another person she's talking to, and who she is very fond of, has seen her picture on this site, and its causing them trouble.

Now I'm just confused, because I feel really bad that I may have stuffed something up for an innocent person. She's asked that I remove her image and mails from here immediately.

I don't know how she found herself here, however, whether the guy told her or not... but yeah... I feel like total ARSE now.

What does everyone else think?

Aussie Angel,

Probably 'Boris' not liking what he sees. Don't worry about it.

Block the emails, after awhile he'll leave you alone.

Besides, it is a VERY rare case when they get removed. There is a reason they were posted to begin with.

good hunting........drod

I've been in email contact with a 'Sandra Anderson' from Accra, Ghana. I searched her email address and submitted her photos to this website to see if they were there. They weren't. I'm still afraid of being scammed. We've been corresponding for about 5 weeks. I tend to believe her. I advised she go to the American Embassy and get info about a visa to the US. I wrote to the US Embassy in Accra, Ghana hoping they can verify that she is who she says she is.

Oh No! You are all wrong. She now loves me and we will be together soon. Alek (i nicknamed her) is checking this week on that tourist visa so i do not have to. Her mum and sister are so excited that i will be taking care of her in the USA. And she only emails me one long form-type letter on Tuesday and Thursday is because she is working hard.
And when i ask her 20 questions and get no answers is probably because she has to rush back to work. And her letter below is true, i know it !
OK, i give, but it was sorta fun. I'll figure some way to ask her.him for money.I sure needed a Hot chick from Russia to show off this summer! Now, back to reality with local Match dot com loosers.

BUT ...maybe she is real, ya think? If you guys are wrong, iam really going to be mad.
