Are you an American or Western European man exchanging emails with a girl from Russia? I was contacted by a girl who turned out to be a scammer. Reader Derrick put together some great advice how to detect scammers.
I only have one advice (#8) to add: If a Russian girl tells you that she will get a visa to the USA instead of inviting you, that is - under the current immigration law - a SURE sign that SHE LIES.

Here is the process how a Russian woman can come to the USA:

If she is considered a relatively young/ attractive woman (let's say under 40, hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings here), then there is virtually NO CHANCE THAT SHE GETS A TOURIST VISA TO THE USA. First the Russian Federation will not allow her to leave the country. Then, even if she was getting out, the USA will deny her admission. The reasoning is that she is considered a risk. How could she not be a risk? If she had family in Russia (husband, children) or a valuable business or real estate. Most likely the woman who writes you will be considered a risk. The only way for her to get a visa into the USA is this procedure:

  1. the foreign man visits her in her native area in Russia
  2. they get engaged during such a visit - take photos of the 2 of you together
  3. he flies back and applies for a K-1 visa. A K-1 visa is also known as Fiancee visa, used for marriage-based immigration
  4. once the K1 visa is granted, the girl can enter the USA and stay there for 3 months. By the end of these 3 months you HAVE to GET MARRIED or the girl has to go back home.
  5. if you get married, the girl gets a greencard and can work
  6. after 3 years of marriage, the girl can apply for a US citizenship. That's when they interview you to find out if it's a real marriage. She also has to answer some questions about US history, political system, etc etc.

Here are Derrick's tricks (1-7) that he uses immediately from the start:
  1. GOOGLE or websearch the first part of the scammers first emails and/or 'profile'. SEE HOW MANY OTHER SITES their listed on! RECORD THOSE SITES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. THAT alone can give you a good idea IF your dealing with a scammer OR not.
  2. GOOGLE or websearch the return email address. See how many 'hits' come from that search and also note all the sites. (many times you'll see the email end up on a 'scammers list') IF YOU FIND THE EMAIL ADDRESS LISTED ON A SCAMMER LIST - don't bother further, your only fooling yourself - no matter what excuse they might give you.
  3. FROM THE START - ASK FOR SPECIFIC INFOMATION! A full name, address, phone number - something. OFFER THE SAME in exchange, except make it a P.O. box and a CELL PHONE rental card that will protect your identity. If you see your requests ignored, which you usually will, don't waste your time further.
  4. ALWAYS ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS that would REQUIRE A SPECIFIC ANSWER outside the use of FORM LETTERS. IF YOU FIND your questions go unaddress in your reply emails from 'them/her' - YOUR DEALING WITH A SCAMMER. Again, don't bother further.
  5. DON'T WAIT 6 MONTHS to offer to talk with the PROSPECT by phone! WHAT A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME! IF THERE IS CHEMISTRY OR APPEARS 'INTEREST' BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU - then sieze the opportunity. ARRANGE A PHONE CALL! International rates to Russia and most places are reasonably cheap. IF YOU GET THE REPLY ' I'M SO POOR I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO A PHONE' - drop the whole thing, your only wasting your time and WILL BE SCAMMED at some point in the future.
  6. PHOTO FLOOD! IF IT/SHE/HIM/THEM - LOOK TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE - THEN IT PROBABLY IS! MOST IF NOT ALL OF THE SCAMMES USE PHOTOS OF MODELS IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES TO POSE ON THE NET IN THEIR PROFILE(s)! Consider this - IF THEY LOOK like a MODEL then tell you they're so poor they don't have access to a phone - YOUR BEING SCAMMED!

ASK FOR A SPECIAL PHOTO TO BE TAKEN. IF YOU SENT YOURS, HAVE THEM TAKE A PHOTO SHOWING THEM HOLDING UP YOUR PHOTO IN THE PICTURE! That is a good 'scammer filter' - even the most adept with Photoshop will easily be spoted.

BETTER STILL - ASK THEM TO TAKE A PHOTO THAT SHOWS THEM HOLDING A CURRENT NEWPAPER OF YOUR CHOICE OR THEIR COUNTRY, WITH A RESOLUTION THAT YOU CAN READ THE DATE! NOT some low grade - grainy photo! FEW WILL EVER DO THAT.

AT THE LEAST - ASK THEM FOR A PHOTO of them wearing a specific combination of clothes and/or colors - something different then the usual 'model clothing' - most use to send out. OR AN OBJECT - TOASTER, ELECTRIC CLOCK, BY A COUCH, IN A ROCKING CHAIR something that would be very hard to use PHOTOSHOP to just PUT in another FILE PHOTO.

*** IF this person is real or sincere, they won't mind doing this for you! ALSO - offer to do the same for their comfort also - that is only fair.
  7. IF THINGS GET SERIOUS - then ASK THEM TO DELETE ALL THEIR OTHER WEB PROFILE POSTS! CHECK ON THE ONES YOU NOTED EARLIER! Again, IF THEIR SINCERE - they will - happily as your their DREAM and future!
  8. If she talks about getting a visa or that she needs money to get a travel visa to the USA, she lies. See the proper course of action described at the top.

Being myself a Russian lady, I'm really getting frustrated when read all these things. By chance I came across this site, and found lots of new things (for instance, never knew there is a sort of business out of bridal scamming, and there are so many people already involved into).

Couldn't read the whole thread (guess it's not possible LOL), but have some ideas that might be useful for someone:

- what I saw, is that 90% of the model-looking girls pics displayed here are probably taken from the young models portfolios, with specific dressing and gestures. Some are taken from the personal web pages, whose owners are unaware that their pictures are used by someone for making money.
Does it really make sense to put these ladies on the black list before you actually meet them and see they are real ones, but not just the virtual clones? If you put one 'clone' to the list, there will be the second one coming, as long as there will be more portfolios to steal the pictures from.

- the email addresses in many cases are evidently faked, just pay attention on the girls ID, sometimes it contains some ironic words like 'bablo' - in Russian it's a slang for money (or any other Russian slang words that a foreigner will not understand), or some other words pointing on the girls intentions, like 'sexy', 'kiss' etc. Rather it may show that a girl is too easy-going, are you sure you really need her as a life-partner? :) The same with the pictures - if a girl sends you her revealing pictures from the beginning, what might be her aim? To show that all parts of the body are present? LOL

- asking for the money. Yes, it's ridiculous if a girl is asking for the small amount of money telling that she is so poor that has no money even for the phone call. It goes without saying. More than that, if a girl starts corresponding with you, she must be ready to bear this kind of expenses, right? Otherwise, it really more seems like she is looking for the sponsorship :)

BUT. You should beware more, if a girl is too insistent to get married without even knowing you well, even if she doesn't need ANY money from you at all, and is eager to
go and settle up with you for the rest of her life and tells you lots of sweet words in her mails.
Especially pay attention on the way she is describing her country and surrounding. If she is always complaining on the poverty, drinking Russian men, her money problems etc. that means only that she is very much eager to get rid of all these problems and you are “the prince” who will do that for her. What for she will ask a small money from you, if later on she will get much more after marriage :)
If you are eager to be such a prince, it’s okay. But if you are looking for the one who will love your personality more than your citizenship, just keep in mind that after she lands in your country, your personality will lose any value for her.

- marriage agencies. Yes, it’s really helpful sometimes. But more chances to meet a sincere girl is just to get acquainted by chance, say in some chat or ICQ, where girls are not just hunting for husbands, but making friends and talking with anyone who is eager to talk. There are more chances to know a person better and avoid long “copy-paste” mails. Besides – it’s totally free LOL (you don’t have to lose money by applying to the agencies).

Don't be too suspicious though :))) And don't expect too much from an Internet affair, these relationships are much more different from the real ones from the very beginning.

and best of luck to all of you guys!!!

MOST of average Russian ladies avoid talks about love through mail, unless their partner himself wants to hear something of that kind from them. The same way, in Russia it's usually a man who is supposed to propose about marriage first, not a woman.

oh. sorry for the duplicated messages :)

one more thing I wanted to add, concerning PASSPORT copies that ladies are sending to you:

Look at the picture first and remember: according to the demands there in Russia it's NOT ALLOWED to have in the passport a picture where you are smiling, tilting your head or turning it a bit, wear too dark or too light clothes. The face must look directly on you, no smile, no tilt, no background.

WOW fellas she is really an amazing woman isn't she? I got the same letters and pictures from her. Only she told me her birthday was on November 24th and also her favorite flower was red roses. She also said that her friend worked at a floral shop where I could pick out any bouquet of flowers for her for her birthday and her friend would waive the cost as a gift to her and me. Of course she pointed out that her favorite flower was the red rose so of course those are the ones I picked out for her. She sent pictures of her parents and brother. I didn't see any similarities with her and her so called brother. It's funny cause all of the stuff she wrote you is the same she wrote me. I wasn't sure from the start, but the second she asked for money I knew she was a scam. How does a dentist not make enough money to buy a plane ticket? You know it is pretty sad that someone that beautiful stoops to this level to make money. It's just too bad she is a fake.

It is too bad she is a fake because she is very beautiful. She told me her name is Diana Kagazejeva, her address is Kirpichnaya 49, 11 Kiev Ukriane. She said she is a Prosthodontist/ Orthodontist and was divorced from her ex-husband a year ago because he cheated on her. We were contacting each other for about a month and a half then she asked for 900 to fly out here. She recently stopped contacting me after she realized she wasn't going to get any money from me.

This website was excellent but if you needed more info on the subject try Russian-detective.com or Marriageagencyscams.com. They are both loaded with good information.

REMEMBER THIS:

This should help any of you people who think that $400 to $900 is going to get one of those Russian SCAMMERS a seat on any plane. It would not even get them a standing room in the BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT. The going rate is over $3000 one-way for a ticket from Moscow to the United States, so ask yourself this, what is $900 going to get them? Perhaps a free night out with the drug dealers at a CRACK HOUSE, on your money, hahahahahaha, LOL. Keep dreaming fella's, keep donating to the tramps, it will help stimulate the RUSSIAN ECONOMY. For what, read the news headlines where RUSSIA is going to TEST OBAMA in his WEAPONS ABILITIES. Now this is the warning before the storm in my opinion, so my advice, stay as far away from them as possible. Oh, has your computer been acting strangely in any way since you contacted and received pics form the Russian Scammers? It should, as they put spyware, Trojans, other Viruses and about anyother spying programs into your computer. Wait till you try to get rid of them. Hope you have good Anti-Spyware, because your going to need Ad-Aware full detailed scans to find them, as even AVG Anti-virus is not picking it up, but then again, most are using the free version. But, Ad-aware has found 2 viruses that AVG did not find. I hope your good at your eradication procedures, because nothing short of every trick in the book will rid your computer of this crap, and you better be good at editing your windows registery in a very clever mannor, or the crap will be hidden elsewhere, and generally not detectable.

This is a real paranoid stupid American - Mr. “I know everything”.
What the fuck you have inside your brain? Shit?
Read some posts above yours and the following one and try to use the two neurons you may have.
Nonsense that is all jerk. Talking about virus and adware, what for? You got your computer blown up?
They will never send you a virus before you really piss them off. You imbecile are talking about the Russian scum. Not the Russian people.
Do you know anything about Russia or Russian woman?
Your country is the number one in scamming, spamming and all this shit.
There are a lot of serious people here most of them from US. As Russian scammers do, don’t create a wrong view or understanding about Americans.
We are all human beings. Nature does the rest. Good ones and bad ones.
Oh, I almost forgot: and stupid ones as we have here.
