Are you an American or Western European man exchanging emails with a girl from Russia? I was contacted by a girl who turned out to be a scammer. Reader Derrick put together some great advice how to detect scammers.
I only have one advice (#8) to add: If a Russian girl tells you that she will get a visa to the USA instead of inviting you, that is - under the current immigration law - a SURE sign that SHE LIES.

Here is the process how a Russian woman can come to the USA:

If she is considered a relatively young/ attractive woman (let's say under 40, hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings here), then there is virtually NO CHANCE THAT SHE GETS A TOURIST VISA TO THE USA. First the Russian Federation will not allow her to leave the country. Then, even if she was getting out, the USA will deny her admission. The reasoning is that she is considered a risk. How could she not be a risk? If she had family in Russia (husband, children) or a valuable business or real estate. Most likely the woman who writes you will be considered a risk. The only way for her to get a visa into the USA is this procedure:

  1. the foreign man visits her in her native area in Russia
  2. they get engaged during such a visit - take photos of the 2 of you together
  3. he flies back and applies for a K-1 visa. A K-1 visa is also known as Fiancee visa, used for marriage-based immigration
  4. once the K1 visa is granted, the girl can enter the USA and stay there for 3 months. By the end of these 3 months you HAVE to GET MARRIED or the girl has to go back home.
  5. if you get married, the girl gets a greencard and can work
  6. after 3 years of marriage, the girl can apply for a US citizenship. That's when they interview you to find out if it's a real marriage. She also has to answer some questions about US history, political system, etc etc.

Here are Derrick's tricks (1-7) that he uses immediately from the start:
  1. GOOGLE or websearch the first part of the scammers first emails and/or 'profile'. SEE HOW MANY OTHER SITES their listed on! RECORD THOSE SITES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. THAT alone can give you a good idea IF your dealing with a scammer OR not.
  2. GOOGLE or websearch the return email address. See how many 'hits' come from that search and also note all the sites. (many times you'll see the email end up on a 'scammers list') IF YOU FIND THE EMAIL ADDRESS LISTED ON A SCAMMER LIST - don't bother further, your only fooling yourself - no matter what excuse they might give you.
  3. FROM THE START - ASK FOR SPECIFIC INFOMATION! A full name, address, phone number - something. OFFER THE SAME in exchange, except make it a P.O. box and a CELL PHONE rental card that will protect your identity. If you see your requests ignored, which you usually will, don't waste your time further.
  4. ALWAYS ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS that would REQUIRE A SPECIFIC ANSWER outside the use of FORM LETTERS. IF YOU FIND your questions go unaddress in your reply emails from 'them/her' - YOUR DEALING WITH A SCAMMER. Again, don't bother further.
  5. DON'T WAIT 6 MONTHS to offer to talk with the PROSPECT by phone! WHAT A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME! IF THERE IS CHEMISTRY OR APPEARS 'INTEREST' BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU - then sieze the opportunity. ARRANGE A PHONE CALL! International rates to Russia and most places are reasonably cheap. IF YOU GET THE REPLY ' I'M SO POOR I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO A PHONE' - drop the whole thing, your only wasting your time and WILL BE SCAMMED at some point in the future.
  6. PHOTO FLOOD! IF IT/SHE/HIM/THEM - LOOK TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE - THEN IT PROBABLY IS! MOST IF NOT ALL OF THE SCAMMES USE PHOTOS OF MODELS IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES TO POSE ON THE NET IN THEIR PROFILE(s)! Consider this - IF THEY LOOK like a MODEL then tell you they're so poor they don't have access to a phone - YOUR BEING SCAMMED!

ASK FOR A SPECIAL PHOTO TO BE TAKEN. IF YOU SENT YOURS, HAVE THEM TAKE A PHOTO SHOWING THEM HOLDING UP YOUR PHOTO IN THE PICTURE! That is a good 'scammer filter' - even the most adept with Photoshop will easily be spoted.

BETTER STILL - ASK THEM TO TAKE A PHOTO THAT SHOWS THEM HOLDING A CURRENT NEWPAPER OF YOUR CHOICE OR THEIR COUNTRY, WITH A RESOLUTION THAT YOU CAN READ THE DATE! NOT some low grade - grainy photo! FEW WILL EVER DO THAT.

AT THE LEAST - ASK THEM FOR A PHOTO of them wearing a specific combination of clothes and/or colors - something different then the usual 'model clothing' - most use to send out. OR AN OBJECT - TOASTER, ELECTRIC CLOCK, BY A COUCH, IN A ROCKING CHAIR something that would be very hard to use PHOTOSHOP to just PUT in another FILE PHOTO.

*** IF this person is real or sincere, they won't mind doing this for you! ALSO - offer to do the same for their comfort also - that is only fair.
  7. IF THINGS GET SERIOUS - then ASK THEM TO DELETE ALL THEIR OTHER WEB PROFILE POSTS! CHECK ON THE ONES YOU NOTED EARLIER! Again, IF THEIR SINCERE - they will - happily as your their DREAM and future!
  8. If she talks about getting a visa or that she needs money to get a travel visa to the USA, she lies. See the proper course of action described at the top.

Maybe someone should test a potential scammer by asking HER for money, to visit her in Russia. *laugh*

I had a profile on singlesnet.com running for about a month. I got lotsa mail but the one that intrigued me the most was from a gal in Russia named Elena Ligos. We've exchanged several emails now and she seems to be unique in the sense that nothing she's wrritrn so far matches up to what I've been reading on this site and others.

HOWEVER, here are the things that got me thinking;

1) She did mention she does not have a comuter or internet at her home, and that she uses her friend 'Natasha's' computer to contact me.

2) She mentioned that her father does not live in the same city as her, her mother and her sister, but that he lives in another city with a new family.

3) She is very sweet, kind and though her English isn't fantastic, it does not seem to come translated through an online translation sote (like Babelfish).

4) She has sengt me 3 photos - The first photo was from her profile on singlesnet.com, the second was sent to me to my email directly from her and shows her standing in front of a sofa and a window. The third p[icture was sent to me this morning after I'd sent a picture of myself saying 'I Miss you!' (in Russian), my meager attempt at making her smile Hey, shutup, you guys all did it too. lol

5) She does mention that her sister is studying to be a doctor, and will be a doctor in about 2 years now.

6) She's spoken very highly of her mother.

7) She does speak of things like 'finding one man who she can share things wirth and be happy'.

8) She's mentioned that she would like to talk, only after I said 'I'd like to hear your voice', to which she replied in an email, 'One day, let's take it slow'. In so many words, that is.

Ok, no I'm no idiot (not saying any of you guys are), just that I actually work in the Fraud Investigation department here in Montreal so I'm more than familiar with scams of all sorts.

HOWEVER - This little number has me actually looking forward to her daily emails. She's cute as hell and if she's NOT a scam, (and I'll find out soon enough, trust me on this), I'm off to Russia at my own expense. What have I got to lose? I need a vacation anyway!

Nevertheless, I'm posting her photo here. BUT, let me tell you what I've done, after reading your site;

I sent an email off to her a little while ago with some seamingly direct 'demands', of asking her some questions, and informing her that I only need to develop my trust further, therefor I'd like to see a photo of her holding a burning candle, or with a piece of paper with my name and date on it, and I want to know her FULL name, address, (complete) and Birthdate.

In my line of work, I seek out fraudsters in the credit card business and I'm said to be very good at what I do, but these Russian dames are hard to track from the get-go because of the sincerity in their words. ANY man would be easily taken.

I don't want to be taken by this one, if she turns out to be a scam, my loss and only an email a day wasted along with some heartfelt emotions. She has NOT asked for ANY money, and has made no mention of me travelling there, or her travelling here. In fact, I suggested I go there myself so we could meet, and she didn't bother to lengthen that bit of mentioning. Odd.

Have a look at her pic, and if ANYONE here knows about or of her, let me know.

Thanks!

This is to the people who post on this website. Scammers use photos of people who are innocent victims, and have no knowledge or role in the scam being perpetrated, in addition to their own photos, if the scammer is attractive or not. If you want proof, go to this link: http://www.anti-sca..otos.html
As you can see, probably some, if not all of these photos have been used on websites whose theme is similar to this one. Save the photos on this page on hard disk and see how many of them are hits on this website. It wouldn't surprise me if pictures of attractive people are also being stolen from online dating websites, or websites where people are rated on their looks like http://www.hotornot.com, http://www.wouldyou..tthis.com/ or http://www.wouldyou..itit.com.
Zhanna's photo on the anti-scam website mentioned above should be be very familiar to the people who post on this website.

Question. I have gone through a couple of these scam artists from either singles.net, match.com etc. I have been able to find out pretty early on what’s going on using various anti-scammer websites. The latest and greatest is a little different. Before I could pick up on it I gave her my cell phone number (about 2 weeks ago). A couple of days ago I e-mailed her that I knew what she was up to and that I did not want to have any more contact. I did not get a response e-mail but a phone call at 3:30 in the morning. The message claimed that she wasn't like that and was sorry I felt that way and she really wanted to talk to me. Of course I'm not buying it.

The question is has anyone else actually talked to one of this scam artists on the phone.

Wow ,so happy I stumbled upon this site. Just started up with a Russian hottie and had some suspicion of course. She hasn't asked for money yet but that's what I'm waiting for. We are on our fourth e-mail and from some of the examples here they sure like to go bowling!! These girls are pretty hot even though they are scammers .I did try her picture in the test for scammer but she didn't show up ....yet. When she asked for my picture I sent her a picture of George Clooney .If she does ask for the cash I will post again and thanks for all the hints.

UPDATE to my previous posting here regarding the last photo you see (Elana Ligos);

The same day I posted that bit about Elena I also sent her an email telling her that 'we' were 'building our trust toward one another', something she seems to speak about a lot in her letters to me.

I informed her that I was more than aware of scams and that under no circumstances would I send money to her, but I would however visit her in her country. My advantage of course being I'm a European living in Canada but still possess my credentials for travel and work anywhere in Europe. Travelling there for me, piece of cake.

I haven't received any email from her since doing this, HOWEVER I DID receive a phone call at 8:00AM EST that is very inaudible, but there was a phone number left on my answering machine. (I didn't answer the phone though I heard it).

I couldn't make out what the girl was saying, but I did catch SOME of the 'numbers' she left on the answering machine.

I did a *69 and got this:

'The last number that called your line is; 000-012-3456'

Anyone ever see/hear anything like this before? I haven't called it, because well.... look at the numbers. lol.

I think one of two things happened when I wrote my email to Elena;

1) She was so offended that she just didn't bother to write back, thinking I have no 'trust' in her.

2) She is a SCAM artist, and knows now I'm aware of how these things work.

I also wrote another email to her from a new email that basically says this:

'Hi, my name's Adam and I just noticed now that you contacted me through singlesnet.com. I'm so sorry for not writing sooner, but I almost forgot I even had a profile on that dating site, but if you're still interested, I'd love to correspond with you!'.

I'm waiting to see what reply (if any) I get in that email box, and I'll definitely let you guys know what the outcome (if any) is.

I'm also posting another photo of 'Elena'. If she looks familiar to any of you, let me know please.

UPDATE to 'Elena Ligos'

Definitely a SCAM. her email is elenaligos@mail.ru and she's got TWO profiles on the same dating site. I wrote to the second profile and even got a reply, exactly the same as the previous contact.

I also sent an email to her, (as I mentioned above) from a new email account and signed it 'Adam'. She was quick to respone to it with yet again a very sweet, warm and inviting email.

I then replied to that email with my real name (as she knows me) letting her know she's been found out and is about to be blacklisted.

Too bad, she's a real cutie. I'd have fucked her.

http://delphifaq.co..1538.shtml is relevant to this page, because the scammer profiled on that webpage used the IP address, 195.161.247.102, which is used by a scammer on this page.

hey..guys....i hope you are all having fun......with these fallen angels....because i'm......i recently received an update on OLGA DOROVSKIH. I replied to several of her emails...telling her that i want to trust her....and that she needed to be honest with me...if she is honestly giving me her true name......(N.B.) even though i have seen the photos seh send me....with different names.......and this is her response....i have posted two emials of her.....she changed her email address.....

UPDATED EMAIL...
Dear Martin,
Sorry for not answering all your questions. I don’t safe your letters
and can’t always remember all your questions.
I told you already that phone is a problem for me. If I am a scammer,
I would have much money and pay to a professional translator to talk
to you on the phone! But I am not a lier and phone is aproblem for me.
Do you understand me now?
Understand - I SHALL NEVER DECEIVE YOU! I am very lonely,
and I would not like to lose chance to meet you! Because I search for
happiness! Not money! I shall not steal your money! Money are not
important for me! Love and happiness in a life is more dear than
any money! But I cannot arrive to you without your help! Therefore
I ask your help to send money. Trust me!
I SHALL NEVER DECEIVE YOU!
Please, understand why I don’t want you to come to Russia.
First, it is rather dangerous as you are a foreigner and people
here can steel you money and rob you. I am just afraid to take
such a responsibilty. If something happens to you, we don’t even
hve good hospitals and professional doctors.
Russia is really a dangerous place for foreigners. I can’t feel
secure here myself. And I am really afraid for you. There is
lots of crime here.
I don’t know what to do now. I am lost and I am so upset.
I have to pay for my visa. All the paperwork is done and all
we need is to pay for it now. That is all. And me will give the visa!
It is such a pity that everything is done with the papers and the
only thing that I need is money now which I don’t have at the moment.
They tell me that if I don’t pay in some days(3-4 days), I will
just lose the opportunity and will not get it.
You do not represent how many forces I has spent to collect
all documents for the visa, passports, medical information
both it is a lot of others. And now if to not pay it all my works
will be vain.
I hope so much that you will help me with these expenses.
I feel so miserable now with this situation. So, please, think
of how much is done and let me know what you decide. You know
how much I appreciate your help and really hope you will send me.
If you don’t, we will lose the time and the chance. And then
I don’t know if I ever have a chance to get it and to come
to see you. You tell me you want me in your life, you like
me but you are afraid to take a risk. You are afraid to make
the last step and this could be the end of our relations.
Please, think of everything written in this letter and write
me as soon as it is possible.
I love you and hope for your understanding.
You can’t imagine what has happened.
I have passed my bus stop going to work and was late. This
has never happened to me. I am loosing my mind I am the same
but I am different at the same time.
I never realized how happy I can be knowing you are there
thinking of me.
I need you so much, oh, my dear.
Tears are on my mind as I am far from you. I never knew
I needed you so much. It is so hard to stand a new day without
you and I cry inside of me. I have silent tears as you are so far.
I cry hopelessly as you are not here with me.
I love you so strong. You are everything for me. I never knew
I could love so much.
It is hard to breathe, hard to move. Just hard to be apart with you.
But you see I am talking already like a poet. You influence on me
like this. Maybe I am talented, don’t you know? :-) Our love
makes me better.
Unfortunately, I have to go and I have to say Good-bye to you again.
You can’t imagine how I hate to say this. This is the worst
thing to me to say “Good-bye” to you. But I have to go and live
my boring life here without you.
But please, always remember how I love you and will always be.
Olga.

Olga has been writing to me for about 2 weeks...... She contacted me through True.com. immediately after signing up. In her e-mail at the True.com website she included her e-mail address at lapa@topsmail.net and said all correspondence should be sent to that address. Never answers specific questions but she loves me very much already, lol.
