Is this Russian girl scamming me? How to recognize scammers

Are you an American or Western European man exchanging emails with a girl from Russia? I was contacted by a girl who turned out to be a scammer. Reader Derrick put together some great advice how to detect scammers.
I only have one advice (#8) to add: If a Russian girl tells you that she will get a visa to the USA instead of inviting you, that is - under the current immigration law - a SURE sign that SHE LIES.

Here is the process how a Russian woman can come to the USA:

If she is considered a relatively young/ attractive woman (let's say under 40, hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings here), then there is virtually NO CHANCE THAT SHE GETS A TOURIST VISA TO THE USA. First the Russian Federation will not allow her to leave the country. Then, even if she was getting out, the USA will deny her admission. The reasoning is that she is considered a risk. How could she not be a risk? If she had family in Russia (husband, children) or a valuable business or real estate. Most likely the woman who writes you will be considered a risk. The only way for her to get a visa into the USA is this procedure:

  1. the foreign man visits her in her native area in Russia
  2. they get engaged during such a visit - take photos of the 2 of you together
  3. he flies back and applies for a K-1 visa. A K-1 visa is also known as Fiancee visa, used for marriage-based immigration
  4. once the K1 visa is granted, the girl can enter the USA and stay there for 3 months. By the end of these 3 months you HAVE to GET MARRIED or the girl has to go back home.
  5. if you get married, the girl gets a greencard and can work
  6. after 3 years of marriage, the girl can apply for a US citizenship. That's when they interview you to find out if it's a real marriage. She also has to answer some questions about US history, political system, etc etc.

Here are Derrick's tricks (1-7) that he uses immediately from the start:
  1. GOOGLE or websearch the first part of the scammers first emails and/or 'profile'. SEE HOW MANY OTHER SITES their listed on! RECORD THOSE SITES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. THAT alone can give you a good idea IF your dealing with a scammer OR not.
  2. GOOGLE or websearch the return email address. See how many 'hits' come from that search and also note all the sites. (many times you'll see the email end up on a 'scammers list') IF YOU FIND THE EMAIL ADDRESS LISTED ON A SCAMMER LIST - don't bother further, your only fooling yourself - no matter what excuse they might give you.
  3. FROM THE START - ASK FOR SPECIFIC INFOMATION! A full name, address, phone number - something. OFFER THE SAME in exchange, except make it a P.O. box and a CELL PHONE rental card that will protect your identity. If you see your requests ignored, which you usually will, don't waste your time further.
  4. ALWAYS ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS that would REQUIRE A SPECIFIC ANSWER outside the use of FORM LETTERS. IF YOU FIND your questions go unaddress in your reply emails from 'them/her' - YOUR DEALING WITH A SCAMMER. Again, don't bother further.
  5. DON'T WAIT 6 MONTHS to offer to talk with the PROSPECT by phone! WHAT A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME! IF THERE IS CHEMISTRY OR APPEARS 'INTEREST' BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU - then sieze the opportunity. ARRANGE A PHONE CALL! International rates to Russia and most places are reasonably cheap. IF YOU GET THE REPLY ' I'M SO POOR I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO A PHONE' - drop the whole thing, your only wasting your time and WILL BE SCAMMED at some point in the future.
  6. PHOTO FLOOD! IF IT/SHE/HIM/THEM - LOOK TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE - THEN IT PROBABLY IS! MOST IF NOT ALL OF THE SCAMMES USE PHOTOS OF MODELS IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES TO POSE ON THE NET IN THEIR PROFILE(s)! Consider this - IF THEY LOOK like a MODEL then tell you they're so poor they don't have access to a phone - YOUR BEING SCAMMED!

ASK FOR A SPECIAL PHOTO TO BE TAKEN. IF YOU SENT YOURS, HAVE THEM TAKE A PHOTO SHOWING THEM HOLDING UP YOUR PHOTO IN THE PICTURE! That is a good 'scammer filter' - even the most adept with Photoshop will easily be spoted.

BETTER STILL - ASK THEM TO TAKE A PHOTO THAT SHOWS THEM HOLDING A CURRENT NEWPAPER OF YOUR CHOICE OR THEIR COUNTRY, WITH A RESOLUTION THAT YOU CAN READ THE DATE! NOT some low grade - grainy photo! FEW WILL EVER DO THAT.

AT THE LEAST - ASK THEM FOR A PHOTO of them wearing a specific combination of clothes and/or colors - something different then the usual 'model clothing' - most use to send out. OR AN OBJECT - TOASTER, ELECTRIC CLOCK, BY A COUCH, IN A ROCKING CHAIR something that would be very hard to use PHOTOSHOP to just PUT in another FILE PHOTO.

*** IF this person is real or sincere, they won't mind doing this for you! ALSO - offer to do the same for their comfort also - that is only fair.
  7. IF THINGS GET SERIOUS - then ASK THEM TO DELETE ALL THEIR OTHER WEB PROFILE POSTS! CHECK ON THE ONES YOU NOTED EARLIER! Again, IF THEIR SINCERE - they will - happily as your their DREAM and future!
  8. If she talks about getting a visa or that she needs money to get a travel visa to the USA, she lies. See the proper course of action described at the top.

To The Posting Directly Above From:
chrisabauer@hotmail.com from Renton in Washington, United States

My Name is Marvin Cecil Gonzalez.

I am from the Windy City ( or 2nd City ).

You can reach me at Cecil_G_63@Yahoo.com.

I have a recent and rather long posting on this Delphifaq Site.

Check it out on this page:
'Dating Scammer Greenday564@gmail.com from Tomsk, Russia'

It will help you and answer alot of your questions.

Your beloved is a scammer.

Several points that you made but seem to still be questioning:

1. The only surname she has sent you is 'Pp'. . . ? ? ?

2. '@yandex.ru' is a notorious and very infamous scammer domain.
Unfortunately, it is an innocent player being only an e-mail provider like google
( gmail ), which is also a scammer favorite.

3. About Yoshkar-Ola. This could get lengthy so here is the summary. It is a scammer
center ( only one of 3 major sydicates )

It is the location of The Mari-El Organization ( Illegal Syndicate ).

It is a Business, a Republic and another Syndicate/Organization that is known to be involved in, not only dating scams, but also drug and prostitution rings as well as illegal arms sales.

It has ties to the Russian Mob and certain Middle Eastern Interests.

These Sydicates have been established in Russia for over 10 years and are being looked at by our government and it's respective spook departments as well as that of other countries.

Other Business/Location names to look out for besides Yoshkar-Ola and Mari-El are the following:

Tatarstan and the Chuvashia Republic.

Some minor players in this dangers scenario are the city/organizations of:

Lugansk, Kazan, Kirov, Cheboksary.

Again, Yoshkar-Ola Organization may be as big as the Mari-El Syndicate.

Yoshkar-Ola is the capital city of the Mari-El Republic.

The Russian Scamming Business Rivals that of Nigeria as the 'world capital' for Banking and Dating Scams.

Three names to look out for that I know of are:

Gunther Romanski, who has been arrested before for fraud;

Vladimir Gabrelyan ( could be a rep of one of the businesses within the Mari-El conglomerate );

And Nikolay Nikolaev, who appears to be a Professor of Computer Science at Goldsmith's College at the University of London.

Either way, are they ISP's, Business Reps, or Pimps

4. Another point of proof of scammer is that you find letters with various Alias's and Pix but the structure of the letters are the same or similar as yours! ! !

It is not impossible for these scammers to get their victims names mixed up and send them letters with another man's name.

After all . . . These letters are formatted using letter templates and various programs that allow them to simply fashion a form letter to personalize it.

Your letters, as mine were, are merely junk mail sent out in bulk, to thousand of potential and actual victims.

If you look at the headers you will see that she is using a professional mass email program such as:

The Bat!, FC '2000, Becky, CommuniGatePro . . . and even software such as Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express.

And using E-mail clients such as X-Mailer and the like.

These are all business email software/programs that spammers use to send you junk/bulk mailings.

It makes keeping track of the mass quantities of email coming and goings more easy and most efficient.

5. And they can simply fake the Airline 411 by looking it up and passing the 411 on to you. You know this yourself as it is in your posting.

Now - about her method of contact:
The scammers use dating services such as True, Singlesnet, Lovetopping, LoveAccess, Match and the like.

They use Community sites such as MySpace.

And they use stolen databases from Job-Search engines such as Careerbuilders and Monster.

Did she contact you first with her e-dress camoflaged like:
d/a/t/i/n/g/s/c/a/m/m/e/r/@/e/m/a/i/l/./s/c/u/m

or like

datingscammer at email dot scum.

These formats slip through any editing filter.

Real people do not lie about their 411.

And they do not have to sneek onto any site specific site, as there are plenty of them.

Some countries even have more dating sites per capita than the U.S.

And even our American E-DatingSites have an International affiliate with links to keep the domestic and international sites connected.

If it smells like a rose it is a rose. If it smell like dirt then it is dirt.

If you are confused then investigate, track, trace and verify.

BUT DO NOT PLAY WITH THESE PEOPLE. THIS IS NOT A GAME FOR FUN AND KICKS.

Please contact me if you are still unsure.

I am sure that you are headed for danger.

You need me.

Check out the 'Dating Scammer Greenday564' page on this site.

My last ( and long ) posting is toward the bottom.

It is filled with 911 links to get you started on your quest for the truth.

Then contact me please.

If you wish, begin forwarding me all of your scammer e-mails with full headers open and every pic that you have as an attachment.

Your Alli, Marvin Gonzalez.

Update on my 4-19-07 posting above ('I'm a single American man in Seattle...'). Yes, my 24-year-old Russian girl 'Yuliya Pp' is a scammer. I asked her in one of my letters about her last name, 'Pp.' She responded that her real last name is 'Ivanova.' I'm sure this is a fake too.
With the help of my new friend Marvin Gonzalez at Cecil_G_63@Yahoo.com, who I see is a frequent and helpful contributor to this site, and who posted a long reply here to my original posting, I've learned the following:

I found 'Yuliya' on RomanceScam.com I was looking at their posted photos, and I found 'Yuliya's' pic on page 115 of the Russian Scammers section. Here's what they have for her:

Elena
Nicks: Elena, Lenchikkk

E-mails: elenochka23@gmail.com, vo.elena@gmail.com

IP address: 217.107.237.72

Mari El profile, from Yoshkar Ola

Now, because of her correspondence with me, we know another name she uses: 'Yuliya Ivanova' ('Yuliya Pp' on MeetRussianBrides.com)

We also now know that she also uses the e-mail addess: ulchikp@yandex.ru and an IP address different from above.

I found her again on RomanceScam dot com, on page 149 of the 'Russian Scammers' section, this time under 'Yuliya' and 'Beautttyyyy', with the ulchikp@yandex.ru e-mail address that she uses with me.

'Yuliya' finally got around to asking me for money; at first she said she needed $800 to show to Russian customs officials to ensure that she had funds for her return flight to Russia. (This is a sure-fire scam tip-off). She finally said she had all the money she needed except $260. I've steadfastly told her I can send her no money. I think she's given up.

Some further comments about 'Yuliya.' As I said in my last posting, I kept replying to her that I could send no money. But although in some of my letters to her I posed questions about some things I was 'confused' about, I never told her that I suspected she's a scammer. I don't want her to change her name and tactics. But now everyone who reads the postings here about 'Yuliya' (or 'Elena,' whatever name she uses) is on to her. I think she's finally stopped writing to me, because she sees that I really am not going to send her any money. But I'm sure she's continuing her scamming ways. In my last few letters to her, after she started hinting about (and finally directly asking for) money, I wrote her that because of her money troubles, her planned trip to America (and side-trip to Seattle to meet me) surely must be delayed; but I said that if she somehow ever is able to come here (which will never happen for a young single Russian girl unless she and her American man go through the difficult and tedious process of obtaining a fiance visa for her), to be sure to let me know her new date of arrival at the Seattle airport and new flight info!! :))))
I found her, as I said in my first posting, on MeetRussianBrides. I think this is a legitimate site, but scammers use it too. I think I'll eventually report 'Yuliya' as a scammer, though I have reservations about doing this because it'll most likely tip her off that her new alias has been found out.
As Marvin points out in his postings, a great way to check on possible scammers is to look at the 'full header' of the e-mails they send (go to the options section on your provider's home page and you'll be able to see how to do this. It's as simple as 2 mouse clicks!). If you see things like 'X-Mailer' and 'The Bat!', as I saw in 'Yuliya's' headers, that's an obvious tip-off that she's a scammer. Marvin says they also can use things like CommuniGate Pro and other mass-mailers (see Marvin's postings). These others I've just mentioned aren't always clear-cut signs of a scammer, because legit Russian women can use internet cafes that may use these also.
And, do a trace on the IP addresses (a series of digits and dots) shown in the full header. Just Google 'IP address look up' and you'll be led to sites on which you can do this. See if one of the IPs can be traced back to or near the city that the Russian woman claims to be writing from. As Marvin points out, if 'Mari-El' or 'Yoshkar-ola' shows up, it's likely a scam. Below is the full header from one of Yuliya's e-mails:

Also, Google phrases from her letters (especially her first letter to you) and see if 'scammer alert' websites come up.
After I realized that my 'Yuliya' was a scammer, I noticed that in all of her letters to me, everything she wrote was double-spaced except for portions in which she tried to answer specific questions I had asked her; these portions were single-spaced. Obviously scammers use form letters, and merely drop in a few lines where they need to 'customize' for their specific intended victims.

Romance Scam dot com is a good site to do a check for your suspected scammer. It's a long tedious process going through the photos there, but that's how I found 'Yuliya.' The site also has forums and comments which can be searched for names and phrases, and many comments and forums have photos of girls that perhaps are not in the main 'photos' section. I'm very interested in you. I'm looking for a serious relationship, and I want to create happy family. Therefore if you are not ready to have serious relations then tell me about itI like the life, I like the whole world, I believe that there are no bad people. All the people are good in their own way, they just have different keys and I'm trying to find them. Everybody have their own senses of life and each of them is free to do whatever he wants until it doesn't hurt somebody. People work to earn for food, and earn to have somebody to share it with, is that's right? I think that life giving us a lot of possibilities and it's silly not to use them isn't it? But only one thing cannot be changed: we are people, we cannot be lonely. Everything we have we need to share. And it doesn't matter is it lifeexperience, a piece of bread or the whole life. There is a legend that once God created the creature, but one day that creaturedecided that it was stronger, better and wiser. For such fault God divided it into two parts into woman and man. Since that timepeople looking for their own halves which belong only them. I have a dream to find mine, and feel myself a solitary one. It sounds like a dream. But I'm sure the wishes come true if you want them to very much. I have a wish to be understood, to have somebody close to be near. I love to laugh and it is pleasant to me, when others laugh. I like to workout at the gym. And although I haven't been in the gym in a while I believe that a healthy body promotes a healthy mind and a strong sense of self worth. I like to travel very much. I have never been abroad before. I dream to find my love and be happy together. It doesn't matter for me where my love is from, the main thing, is to love, care, match each other and be happy together. Do you think so?I'm real particular about what I want in a man, but I have real strong convictions about marriage and monogamy. I think what really matter is who the person is inside. I want the person to be intelligent and lively with a sense of humor. I have hobby to prepare different dishes. I love to find the new prescriptionsof cooking and to surprise the friends. They always liked my dishes. My favourite dish the baked hen with garlic. It is pleasant all my friends. It is very a pity, that you can not it try. But I am sure that it would be pleasant to you too. You can tell to me more about your life? I would like to see more your photos.I like to talk, a lot, and want someone that I can hold an intelligent conversation with to all hours of the night. I think we've got a good chance to know each other better... Spring - my liked season, I likes to look, how the nature comes to life after winter. Now at us warmer weather, what weather at you?I think that after tis letters you will know more about me. I believe that the main love in my life still will come, the god will help me with it. Tell to me more about itself, what you like to listen to what your liked dish, what your liked film, what else music? It is my first experience of acquaintance through the Internet, but this way has like me I'll be waiting for your reply and don't be shy, please, ask me about anything. Olga
