Last week I got contacted via my profile on a dating web site. The person had a temporary profile only with no picture posted and sent me a one-liner including her yahoo address and she asked me to add her on the yahoo messenger.

I was bored so I fulfilled her request.

Her profile had said she was from Illinois, USA. I live in California. Once we chat on Y! messenger, she says she just left Madrid/ Spain and is in West Africa now.

Supposedly she works for a diamond company which is owned by her step dad. She lives with her daughter since her husband (or kids father, I do not recall) left her after the kid was born. Here are her photos - I am not quite sure that they are really HER photos:

She also tells me that she is on bad terms with her step dad since he asked her for sex. (If that's her real photos, I might ask her for sex also.)
During the chat she was kind of evasive, did not answer my questions but instead asked me questions herself. After about 30 minutes she said she'd have to leave West Africa soon and wants to come to the Bay Area (which is why she had written me) and whether she could stay at my place for a week or two until she had gotten herself a place.

She wanted to see photos of my house (I mailed her two).

During the following week we briefly chatted maybe 3 times. No deep conversation, this woman does not spell well, and obviously does half a dozen chats parallel.

I asked her to visit a web site that I host so that I could trap her IP number. It was

I used two different tools (web sites) to identify the location she was coming from. Most web sites reported this IP as in London, UK. One web site located it as CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI.

If you ever want to do this kind of check, grab the IP number from email headers and use a web site like on it. You need to make your email program or web client display all headers, to see the 'Originating IP'. Yahoo's email client offers this. I do not know about AOL or hotmail.

She claims to be on AOL (which I found strange, does AOL offer service in West Africa?)

Yesterday she started talking how her step-dad does not send the money he is supposed to send. A kind of allowance instead of a paycheck. Don't ask me for an explanation of this concept.

I did not like to hear her talk about bills that she cannot pay. I'm kind of allergic to this talk when I know a person from 60 minutes of chatting only :-)

Anyway, today she asked me directly to Western Union her the money, $750. As I am posting this, I am still chatting with her. A copy of today's chat is below.

hey all ladies,,just want to tell you all that i have found 3 scams now and they are chatting with me. they are sick people.. and they based in UK now and they are talking about Nigeria.
I wish we can put them behind bar for doing this
2008-09-15, 16:29:54
My scammer is also in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria. Said he found my profile on a dating site. We started e-mailing then IM'ing with Yahoo. He was quite a smooth talker and like all the others, a smooth talker. Saying all the right things. Claimed to be Tony Brown from South Lake Tahoe, California. Was a building contractor doing a project for a shopping center in Nigeria. Two weeks into the time line, he wants to know if I have a Capitol Once Card. He wants to deposit his money into it as he doesn't want it with him there. Tell him I don't have one, then he wants me to apply for one in my name. Tell him I can't as my credit was destroyed in my divorce. He proceeds to apoligize for asking. All of a sudden his daughter is in a car accident, he needs money. She has a broken leg, and suffered some possible brain damage. The hospital wants money for her care. Told him all I had to my name until payday was $30.00. Told me not to send it, I might need it. Now 3 days later, it's he's got to have $300.00 for her medications. He's desperate, please can I send him money. Told him I still had my $30.00 and I could send him that. Could I try for $100.00. Told him I'd go to the pawn shop and sell something, now it's 'so, you'll be able to send the whole $300.00?'. Oh, by the way, I let him know that I was having problems with my heart and after a trip to the ER over the weekend, I had to go into the hosp for tests, they may want to put in a pace maker. Was he concerned? No, just wanted me to be sure I e-mailed him with the Western Union transaction number. He gave me the following address: Name: Muriose Pedro, 25 Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria 23401. Claimes this is is daughter, Ruby's doctor needing the money for her meds. He lost me way back on the 'Capitol One Card' deal, and I wanted to see how far this would go. Of course, all the sweet talk is gone as he's so worried about his daughter. (All I questioned was why his attitude and/or mood had changed when I couldn't comply with his wishes for the Capitol One.) For those who haven't checked into anything on these scammers, google 'Nigeria'. There are several sites that tell you what the economy is like, their banking practices, etc. Unless they are in the middle of the bush, they have plenty of access to financial instutions to get to their funds. If they are there on business and having trouble with getting paid, or needing medical coverage, they should have had all those situations addressed before leaving their home country to travel to Nigeria to be 'trapped' by mishaps or misunderstandings with those they are working for. Again, addressing the hotel bill---they (the hotels) demand payment up front, either cash, travelers checques, or credit card. They don't let you run a tab. I know, I worked at a popular hotel chain for a couple of years. The more questions you ask these people, the more evasive they become. As for the language 'barrier' Tony claimed to be German. That's why the poor English grammer. I never questioned it with him, but it did send up the red flag. Am I stupid enough to fall for this? NOT!!!!!

Another scammer I ran into last year was a Francis Daniels. Same dating site. He claimed to be working for UNICEF and was having trouble getting paid to pay his hotel bill. I checked with UNICEF here in the US, they had no record of him as being employed with them or even as a volunteer. Tracked him down to New York City. The last time I wrote to him, I asked how the weather was. I'd already checked it on line for both Nigeria and New York. What he described as being in Nigeria wasn't correct. My last statment to him was 'How's the weather there in New York City?' Needless to say, I never heard from him again. Hello???!!!! some of us may be blond, but we're not always 'BLOND'!!!!!

If you have the slightest hint that it may be a scam, all you have to do, is look up on the internet where they claim to be stranded. Find the address for the US Embassy and the Red Cross. Give them both addresses and tell them you've contacted both and they are there to help out, but tell them 'you have to go to them in person', they don't want to hear any of that, they'll act dumb as to what you said or have some excuse why they can't. I went so far as to give Tony the address of a bank that could help him with his payments, so they would be transerfered to his account in the US or at least contact his previous bank there in South Lake Tahoe, (which he claimed to have closed the account out when he went over to Nigeria) and set up a new account. From the address he'd given me for the Western Union, the bank was only a few blocks from him. Haven't heard back from him. Don't expect he will write back.

Reading over all these scams, does any one else notice how when you 'drag your feet' about send them money and your reasons as to why, they are only focused on when you're going to send it! Doesn't matter what you ask, they are stuck on how to send it and the address they want it sent to. Also, notice, very seldom do they want it sent to them directly, but to someone else??
