Enabling and disabling automatic login in Windows XP

Question: How can I configure Windows XP to log on automatically?
Answer: You can configure Windows XP to automate the logon process if your computer is not part of a domain.
- (click Start, then Run to get to the 'Run' box), then in the run box execute this command:
control userpasswords2
- You will see a check box labelled 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer'.
Remove the check from this check box.
- Click on OK.
- You'll be prompted to enter the user name and password you wish to automatically log on with, and then click OK.
Now anyone with physical access to your computer can use this machine. It makes your computer more convenient to use, but at the same time can pose a privacy / security risk.
If you need to start up the computer but do not want to log in automatically one specific time, then You can suppress the automatic logon by pressing the SHIFT key during the boot process. Windows will prompt you for identification and authentication information interactively. This is the official method to temporarily disable automatic logon at startup.
If you want to permanently disable the auto-logon, you can execute this command from the Run box:
rundll32 netplwiz.dll,ClearAutoLogon

No, sorry, this doesn't help. That box is already unchecked for me, and I still get a prompt to choose a user account, even though I only have one! How can I have a completely non-prompting bootup?
Thanks.

Exellent, thanks was looking for that setting, albeit to do the exact opposite of this tutorial and turn it ON instead, same principle though, worked a treat and now my laptop is secure!
